Rod re the circlips,
Make sure you fit them with the sharp edge outwards. They stay in there better then.
That one looks like it's the other way round... :?

Thanks Kev, All is well now. Circlips are right, sharp edge outwards..... four piece oil rings and the three other rings all ok....all installed now......working beaut.

Another day now and time to push on now.

Expect another up-date or question later on about something :D

Cheers again for the pointers.

Ok....this must be the slowest rebuild ever :)

Anyway, just about finished.

I'm putting in the new clutch plate and it occurred to me, should I have a new pressure plate too????

There was nothing wrong with the clutch operation prior to stripping the motor down, so your thoughts please.

If the pressure plate (diaphragm spring) is an old green dot one I would fit a Cooper S blue dot one.
But it is most important to set the assembly height of the diaphragm correctly (the diaphragm spring flat when assembled) otherwise you lose clamping pressure.
Most clutches I have done recently needed .040" or more machined off the 3 backplate lugs to achieve this, due to flywheel and backplate refacing over the years, and ignorance of this fact.

See http://www.minimania.com/web/SCatagory/ ... ticleV.cfm
for the theory and correct practise.

Thanks Kev :) Good point about machining the three lugs.

And the other thing I want to do is install an oil pressure gauge in Ribena. One of the very kind fellas (Thanks Peter ) in the VMCI gave me a Smiths oil pressure gauge, which reads from 0-60 PSI but I need the gear to make it work. Some sort of a banjo type set-up so that I can still have the yellow light on the dash. I would also think/hope that a rebuilt engine would give 60 PSI as a minimum :)

And here's a (bit blurry) pic of the new engine - only one or two things left to do, then I start work on the CV's and brakes.

New blue dot clutch will be on the way after I've paid for it tonight.

Just for giggles, I put the dissy cap on with the blue leads to the plugs.....looks awesome. Might even lash out and get blue radiator hoses too :)

Took the plugs out and cranked her over.....all sweet as.

Found one oil leak.....one of the chest covers on the back of the motor, so that's now been attended to with another gasket. Why don't they make the cork gaskets the correct size????

Glue one side of the gasket onto the cover with contact glue. Use a smear of RTV Ultra Grey on the engine side and the gasket won't move around and will seal. :D

Bugger......the other chest had a small leak when I had a look at the motor today.

Tightened the bolts a bit more so I'll see tomorrow after work if that leak's now fixed.

Gotta fix them before the engine goes back in.

The new clutch should be here tomorrow but can't do anything about it for now.

Well folks, it's been a while since I updated you with Ribena.

Engine.......back in and all finished, just needs a fine-tune out on the road.

Oil pressure gauge.....all sorted

New brakes all round.....still to do

New tyres all round.......still to do

Then Road Worthy Cert , join a car club, get club plates and away we go. Nearly there :)
