I've been through all of this as well. I started with a very light 3mx1.5 that I sold to someone on here. Brilliant trailer, towed well and you hardly knew it was behind you. Was bare bones and weighed less than 300kg on single axle. Downside, nowhere to store anything. You cannot possibly make a trailer that will tow a mini and stay under 750kg, but I would love to be corrected if thats possible.

I think this is Greg's old trailer, I kept a photo as it looked light weight which is great!

So, is this trailer 3mtrs long, or am i mixing up trailer/ post description.

I can measure it if you'd like. It is behind my shed. The deck is about 400mm longer than the absolute minimum required to get a mini on. Toes beautifully behind my Golf Wagon.

Ok, I did some measuring and below is a sketch of the trailer with the dimensions.

My car has a low ball load but a high towing capacity (75kg, 1800kg) so I have to be careful to put the mini in a position that doesn't create too much ball load but still has weight forward.

I find that I place the car so that the front tyre is 590mm back from the leading edge of the deck. This means that the trailer is a bit long and that the axle is a bit far back for my ideal setup. When I have the car on the trailer the rear of the car overhangs the rear of the trailer.

Below the sketch labelled "Trailer as measured" is a sketch of the dimensions I would use if I was making another trailer from scratch. With the revised dimensions the front of the car overhangs the leading edge of the deck by 150mm and the rear bumper is aligned with the rear of the deck.

It would be possible to take more length out of the deck behind the rear wheels to save weight but I have it level with the rear bumper so the number plate is at the rear of the unit as required by the authorities.

I hope this helps.

Just remember that the NCOP states that the axle must be no further *forward* than the middle of the load area of the trailer. Mine got knocked back for this last year when I had it inspected to put on WA license (despite it being registered and on the road since 1968), however I took a cue from Ted Curr who had the same issue.

I just added a tool box on the front. This counts as "load area". Trailer passed inspection.

Unfortunately when the Swift is on there it can't go forward enough due to the toolbox!

If the toolbox at the front counts as load area and the axle was not moved then now the axle is further back in the "load area"

AWDmoke - I think you may have said that the wrong way round VSB1 states "Rear overhang (rear loadspace) must not exceed the lesser of 3.7m or the front load space" i.e the axle cant be furher forward than the middle of the load space.

The brother unit moved his truck with one, made it easy to load seeing as it wasn't running

Sorry, fixed!. Axle can't be more than half way way of the load area.
The above trailer is an example of what would not pass, well not without a toolbox on the drawbar!

I have a small mini sized trailer, that I'd like to swap for a bigger trailer. Essentially I'd like something that will fit a Renault Clio on as well as the mini. If someone wants a smaller trailer and has a larger trailer, lettuce snow.

Cheers
Aaron

I would make the wheel tracks 300mm longer and extend them forward over the draw bar triangle so it would be 1300mm and the deck would be 3200mm. Now the axle is 20mm behind half way on the deck.
