OK so you think putting a roll cage in the car will save you eh? Sure it reduces the risk, but does not eliminate it. I work in engineering, where it is all about reducing to an acceptable risk. In the end the risk becomes acceptable as the probability of you dying is so low you think it won't be you. The only person it becomes unacceptable risk is the one who does die.

Look at Michael Park - codriver for Markko Martin - who died earlier this week. He was in a car with all the safety devices, designed for WHEN it hits a tree, not IF like a road car. The speed, angle of impact and the side it hit on all conspired to kill him. And Markko was not injured.

It's a sad day for WRC, in fact all of motorsport. Just goes to show the element of danger is still there, no matter how much safety gear you have. On the other hand though, those cars survive an awful lot of punishment and keep going, with no effect on the driver or co driver what so ever. RIP Michael Park.

Although its kinda harsh - it was just a matter of time before Markko Martin got him or his co-driver killed. When he was still at Ford he had some massive crashes and even one earlier this yr at Pug.. so much so he got a bit of a reputation for coming off the road.

My 2 cents on this topic which has got so incredibly large encompasses only two things.. 1 cent for each u might say..

A) I agree with Chong - "In God's timing"... whether u believe in God or not or whether everythings fate who cares, (this aint ausphilosophy.com) I reckon if youre gonna go in a car accident, you're gonna go. And the majority of times it's at least partly your fault. So drive safely, use all the senses given to you and never drink and drive.

B) Have good seats and seatbelts. And wear them properly. What someone said before about wearing no seat belt could even be better than a non-inertia reel worn incorrectly is quite true. In some unlucky Air accident cases passengers have survived initial impacts only to have their abdomens torn by seat belts. In some cases I believe people have even been torn in two around the belt line.. Granted this is up to 9G impacts we're talking about, but basic principles.
