hey,
i had a electrial fire under my dash tonite and i need to remove the barrel, how do i do that. is there some kind of trick.
i need help as soon as possible.

Bit more info Please. Is your barrel on the centre of your dash or on the steering Column. If its on the Dash, Get a screw driver on one of the slots and tap it anti clock wise. If its on your Steering Column it means drilling the bolts out :shock: refitting one on the Steering column I have no idea.

he said the fire was a 'dash fire' so im guessing he's got a centre ignition barrel.
what you will notice (if like mine) is that its like a huge flat heat, except theres a raise in the middle for the key.
yes you get a flathead screw driver, put it on one slot and tap it unwound

I've just ordered a UK ignition barrel and door barrel from MiniSpares, it will be interesting to see if they fit the Oz locks.. :o .

The barrel is on the steering column, does anyone know how it can be removed?
There was a electrical short at the end of the barrel whick caused the fire, anyone know what may have caused this?

LUCAS, the inventor of the short circuit.

More than likely, and the usual case of electrical fires, is the wire's insulation crumbling over time or wearing through, causing a short. I had a speedo cable almost burn me out once in an old FJ landcruiser just because it fell against the manifold, the insulation on the cable burnt through and the cable heated up, burnt right through the firewall and took out a few electrical wires. Have twice had short circuits occur, normally when driving on a busy road, typical. It's a scary thing to smell and see the smoke billow from under the dash.. guaranteed to wake you up.

In short, unfortunately it's one of those things on old cars. Old wiring. Often overlooked and can reduce all your hard work and money into a nice little black heap.
