Post subject: | New Alternator Wiring |
Just got a new alternator for the mini, its a 70amp, Lucas compatible. Its got the 3 terminals, 1 for battery, 1 for dash lamp and the other for tacho. No, how do I hook this up (atm its just engine being started on workshop floor) I assume: battery -> positive solenoid That be the main one I want yeh? |

Do a search ffs, this has been raised plenty of times, last time last week. I even once took a 1/2 hour leave from that meaningless, mundane drag I call my life to write a "how to". No just kidding, no one ever searches on ausmini. Alternators dont have a tacho hookup (as far as I know), most modern units come with the big post terminal for the battery connection (through the starter solenoid), and two extra wires that go into the internal control unit. 1 is usualy thicker and is the power supply for the control unit, this goes to the "on on ignition" (position 2) half of the fuse box - make sure its fused, either by hooking it up to the fused side of the box or by puting an inline fuse. The other wire goes to the ignition light. done. Oh and make sure you upgrade the whimpy original wire from the alt to the solenoid, if you want to benefit from the full increase in alt output ( I just used a battery cable like the one from the solenoid to the starter motor). And make sure that the belt is really tight, these modern alternators require much greater belt tension. |
