The engine number was issued in NSW. The next 2 numbers after the N is the year it was issued. They usually issue a new engine number if they are unreadable after decking the block or if the number is unreadable from being stolen or if the engine is from overseas and the engine number plate was removed.
Here is an example of a block stamped in 1968 by the NSW Police.

To check you have a 1970 MK2 S engine I would look at the rear of the block for the casting number AEG312 like in this photo below.

A late 1970 MK2 S may also have the AEG634 casting.
