Hi all, new member..in the process of buying a 1970 Morris Mini Cooper s Mk11. It has the compliance plate with the YG2S4 prefix but the engine number starts with a N and ends with a P. Any advice...thanks John

Engine number is a police number n is for nsw

The engine number was issued in NSW. The next 2 numbers after the N is the year it was issued. They usually issue a new engine number if they are unreadable after decking the block or if the number is unreadable from being stolen or if the engine is from overseas and the engine number plate was removed.

Here is an example of a block stamped in 1968 by the NSW Police.

To check you have a 1970 MK2 S engine I would look at the rear of the block for the casting number AEG312 like in this photo below.

A late 1970 MK2 S may also have the AEG634 casting.

People used to think that if their Cooper S had the NxxxxxxP engine number then it was ex police. This is far from the truth. All police cars would have come with the standard factory engine number for the model. I hope the car your looking at isn't using the NxxxxxxP engine number as evidence it was a police car.

Hi all, thought i'd post a couple of pictures of my Mini to see if I can work out how to use function. Will get a few more under bonnet etc when I get it back from mechanics....new exhaust and head gasket being fitted....J
