I have a dream that one day a job on the Mini will not escalate!

Well what a surprise... Had a few rust spots on the bottom of the drivers door; I know, I thought, I will clean those up. A quick little job to do. Well it now it has no skin! Door Frame is OK a bit of rust but OK I think.

I think re-skinning a door is a bit above my pay grade so can anyone recommend someone in Melbourne (northern area preferably) who could do it for me? I will do both doors as the Passenger is swelling. I can order the skins if needed.

On a separate note while I have the skins off I am going to fit side intrusion bars, has anyone done this or got images of a late rover door so I can see how it's been done?

Cheers folks

The door skins that are available will need to be modified. Look at your door skin when you buy the replacement, top flange needs to be cut off and hole for door handle will have to be modified, also you will have to use the existing door handle support bracket .this bracket is spot welded to the skin. When refitting this bracket it MUST be in the exact position on the skin. Not a hard job to do but it takes time. Intrusion bar will not fit as far as I know These doors are very strong you can fit a couple of 16 mm square HS steel tubes with some mods if you want but this takes time. If anyone has fitted intrusion bars in round nose mini doors please us know .I would be more concerned that if I had an accident the steering wheel would cause considerable damage to a human body I think side intrusion ADRs came in about 1976 . Good Luck Dave.

Should have said it's a 1988 Rover Mini! Getting a new skin is not a problem, I am just not sure I can fit it... Yes I will have to re watch the Binky episode, thanks for the reminder.

Door skins are difficult to make ,I would charge about $1000,00 per skin fitted ,that is why you buy new ones

What is the going price for a reskin, assuming no rust repairs etc needed. Customer supplies the skin too.

Door off hardware removed .Fit new skin only, 2 hours Labour , file edges on skin no body filler required , A body shop can quote whatever they like because it is not insurance work. Good clean work although a busy shop may not want to do the job if they have to modify the skin. They are easy to do correctly. You should check the fit of the old skin to body before removing it.Also after skin is fitted spray cavity wax in door to prevent rust must better than fish oil. Allen

So to get back to the original question:

Can anyone recommend someone in Melbourne who can fit new door-skins (supplied by myself), who has experience with Mini doors?

Two body shops with Mini experience are Harvey Bodyworks (used and I believe recommended by Link Automotive, across the road from them in Mitcham) and Adrian Read Smash Repairs in Hastings.
