I recently picked up a nice Moke heater - the steel bodied type that looks a bit like a Mk1 Cooper in silhouette. I believe the Moke type were also common on later UK and NZ cars. I have had a Mk 1 S before and the heater was pretty basic. The Moke one looks similar in concept but has the motor centrally mounted and barrel fans on both sides. What do people think of these heaters - better or worse than the Cooper type? Just curious really. I bought it thinking I might put it in my 850 to keep my feet warm in the depths of the Tassie winter. |

gotta be better than nothing! I kinda wonder about the point of having a heater in a Moke.... almost like a flywire door on a submarine |

A demister became compulsory under ADRs. |

Yes, it was all about the demister. I have done the exact convertion. The fan works better than the cooper heater. You only need to change the pivot plate, face plate the the arm to move the pivot plate to make it look old school. |

Thanks for that Scoop - good information. I would consider doing a Mk1 style conversion if I could find the face plate and pivot plate, but I suspect the parts would be expensive. Even buying repro heater 'ears' like the Cooper heaters had would be more $$. I will just pull the heater down, check the core for leaks (looks fine visually), give it some fresh paint and then decide what I'm doing with it. I have a triple gauge cluster neatly mounted under the switch panel and will have to reengineer this to make room for the heater. And I will have to pull the dash trims out to fit up the demisters. So, the heater install is probably a long term project for now. |

Nippy cars sell the face plate painted ready to go for £30 or so I think. The ears are also available for not much. |

Thanks Scoop. If I was putting this heater in a Cooper or replica I might go the full Mk1 look. But all the parts from the Moke heater are cleaning up nicely (I broke the switch getting it out but have ordered a Narva replacement that will look identical). The heater only cost me $70 so I'm not going to get too carried away. I might lash out on a pair of ears as that will give it the finished off look especially with some black crackle paint on the fascia panel. Will turn out a LOT cheaper than a genuine Mk1 Cooper heater... |
