Dowel hole. There is another down the bottom, behind your hand. To align the flywheel housing with the gearbox casing.

It's a 1275 motor that is going into a Deluxe. Looks like it is a bit of hybrid though. No dowel where the hole is. Not all early idler/clutch housings have that hole though.

The dowel in there didn't always align if you mixed housings and gearbox cases. Over the years I built 2 boxes which needed one dowel or the other left out, to align the outrigger bearing.
