Post subject: | How does the exhaust to gearbox clamp fit? |
Hi, Been doing some bits and pieces to my Mini over the last few weeks and noticed that the exhaust gearbox clamp in missing. I have an LCB and rubber UJs and with the limited clearance down there it seems like a good idea to me. Do I need one of the brackets (GEX7526) to bolt the manifold clamp to or do I bolt directly? If I bolt directly, which fixing do I use? I cannot find any decent photos or drawings in my Googling, so if someone can provide that woul dbe much appreciated. Cheers, Paul. |

If you make up an appropriately shaped strap you can bolt the clamp directly using one of the diff side cover bolts ..but this single point can tend to work loose (and maybe destroy the thread in the diff case). If there's room, then the appropriate bracket that bolts to several of the side plate bolts is a better choice. Cheers, Ian |

Paul, I was playing with the same issue a few days ago. Photo shows a set of Perry LCB extractors which I was test fitting, prior to modification. They have a strap (in red circle) welded to them which could be attached through a side cover bolt. I didn't like this for a similar reason to the one Ian has just mentioned. I have welded a bracket to the extractors adjacent to the remote housing fixing point (green circle, 5/16" UNC thread). I hope there is enough room to attach the new bracket to the remote housing when the motor is fitted to the car, otherwise I may play with making a bracket that can be fitted from below. Clive |

Like this. Attachment: Front exhaust bracket to gearbox.jpg Some people like to fit a stud instead of using a bolt because there is less chance of stripping the thread in the box. |
