I have 3 different fans on my parts shelf. Steel fan, Yellow plastic, and White Plastic. Is there much difference between all 3? Obviously the steel fan is heavier than the plastic, but which moves air better? Want to get the best air flow with the least amount of HP loss. I do have a Thermo fan kit but i want to save that for my next build. New Alloy radiator, rebuilt engine and gearbox going in soon, new hoses actually pretty much new everything. |

I remembered Vizard had a bit of advice in his white book so I looked it up... He likes the 2 blade fans the most but apparently they are unobtainable, after that he seems to like about 16 blade plastic as they have an airfoil shaped blades and is consequently more efficient and costs less power. This is not from my experience just passing the info on. From my experience though there's quite a bit of airflow through the radiator at speed, I run an electric fan only in my engine conversion with the radiator in the standard spot, I've driven up to 2hrs without the fan coming on, I have a light on the dash for when the fan comes on , radiator is a non standard custom job with high fin count and triple pass, despite this if the air wasn't flowing it would need the fan. |

I like the 16 blade steel ones they don't shed blades when old. The 4 (2x2) blade comp steel ones are better but noisier. |

just throw the white plastic fan in the bin. They become very brittle with age. |

Hi Doc, What is your opinion of the Dowty 4 blade variable pitch fan? No longer available, sometimes see one on eBay overseas. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/imag ... e8QM7XqA&s |

A shame they are no longer made. Perhaps some off-white satin paint on a yellow version would suffice. |

The yellow plastic ones comes in several different versions (blade width varies). The white ones have the widest blades in the plastic family. Cheers, Ian |

I have seen several comments about the white plastic fan's in regards to their performance which leads me to ask if BMC Australia put out a service bulletin to have the fan's changed at any point? When I purchased my car a number of years ago it had a 16 narrow bladed yellow plastic fan. ![]() |

Not sure if it was a Mini one or was on some other pommy car. |

Checked my Steel fan, its the 16 blade steel one. Guess I'll clean it up, repaint it and use that one. Eventually the 1100 will go back into the wife 76 Leyland. Mine will get a 1275 so I'll worry about a fan when i build that one. drmini in aust wrote: I like the 16 blade steel ones they don't shed blades when old.
