Hey all, I have been chipping away during lockdown 2.0 here in Melbourne, on a 1970 Morris Mini K. The exterior of the shell was in great condition but the floor from toeboard to heelboard, as well as the boot floor (extending into the back seat base) are in terrible condition and it feels like every time I touch it there's a bigger hole...There comes a time when you need to admit you just don't have the skills to do the job at hand. I have sourced a donor cabin floor in decent condition and looking at buying a new boot floor/back seat panel from minisport.. I've just received a quote for 84.5 hours to remove the old floor, clean up the donor, brace the shell and weld in the new one... Can anyone with experience verify that this sounds 'about right' or if its too high/low? I've got a fair bit of time and money invested in this shell already and would hate to give up on it but I'm at a point where I cant do what needs to be done. If you know how long the job should take, have done it yourself or know someone in the Melbourne area ( Im in SE suburbs) who could do it, I'd like to hear your thoughts |

Based on how long it took me to replace the floor in my van, that amount of time sounds about right. Mine was rusted from the toeboard back to the rear subframe mounting panel as well as the sills. Albeit mine was replaced with new panels and I did the work myself, but by the time I removed all rusted sections and cleaned it up ready for the new panels, I reckon there was at least 2 weeks solid work in it. Most important part is bracing the shell so it doesn't flex when you cut the old floor out. And a rotisserie is an absolute must! |

Time sounds ok as Gambo says brace the body, set up on car stands weld some square tube across diagonal door opening.They should do this and check welding make sure they use a weld through primer between joints,Copper or zinc primer.Where possible use an inverter spot welder backed up by a MIG welder. It has to be done Neatly or it will always look bad ,All jobs done correctly take time,When spraying the underbody seal joins with urethane and spray with stone guard then body colour. Maybe you could save some time if you removed the old floor ? Use an oxy cutter or small grinder with a cutting disc to remove all rusted parts, Then drill out the existing spot welds with a 6mm drill be careful not to drill through both panels when drilled half way twist off panel with vise grips.Hammer and chisel does a lot of damage.
