Hi guys, im new.Honestly know nothing about cars. But IM WILLING TO LEARN. firstly my problem comes from buying a mini.Ive been window shopping around and realise in Sydney its not that easy to obtain one within my budget (ive got a low budget apparently..hehe...) anyway ive seen a 1977 Leyland i kinda like, interior and exterior's neat and stuff... but there are signs of rust around the engine and also under the carpets on the floor panels..ive been seeking advise and thought the most logical ones to seek is this forum.. anyway i cant seem to get my mind off it.. i must admit that my knowledge on cars is as bad as my knowledge on computers..but i must say im proud to say that at least the car that intrigues me is a MINI and im willing to learn and discover more about it.... thus im looking forward to my first MINI..and hopefully this passion will spark on like an undying fire.. i even bought the book by haynes on the mini and hopefully learn more from there... Anyway since im shopping around, ideally for a rounded nose model(60s deluxe or cooper)could you guys give this newbie-passionate-stubborn-wana-learn-everything-about-mini a hand on what to look out for?well apparently ive got my eyes set on one original 1977 Leyland with all intact..but worried the engine might die one day...it clocked 76000 already...and there seems to have rust around..is this normal?even in the boot area? thankie a millie.. ![]() PS ive got a mechanic friend in Melb and hes been telling me based on his experience in cars(he restored one of these beauties before) that rust is most costly..any valuable experiences you guys have for me to make my shopping decision harder? Cheers. |

Welcome, while your at it willing to learn, I wouldn't go around calling it a MINI for very long ![]() ![]() I would agree get a sound body, anyone can get a motor or fix it cheaply enough, panel work is the most time consuming and expesive if bad. Fill out your profile and maybe somebody local can give you a hand looking at one. a 1977 would be a Clubman (square nose)..which let's face it, we all know were the best ![]() |

Well with much less hassle and time and comparitively less money than a respray and full shell rebuild...if it's dodgy and rusted that is.. ![]() J_A_M wrote: Every mini will have rust somewhere.....some more than others....so don't let that out you off.

hi there, Welcome aboard! You've come to the right place for advice and knowledge and good onya for wanting to buy/do a mini! It is rewarding, believe me! Join the MCC! it's your one stop shop for info and a good purve and other people's cars. Also you can come to an Ausmini event like the dyno day on 10th September (the thread is in this section somewhere). Either way, say hi, make yourself known and you won't regret it! |

Yea, body fixes are expensive, mechanical fixes are cheap (relatively). Besides we can all help you out with mechanical but if it's a major body problem lik rust, you're on your own! ![]() |

hey guys just wana do two things. firstly to express my thanks: 68Delux--thanks for the mechanical offer, and its great being in this forum too! gafmo--i couldnt agree more on the girlfriend part.i can foresee how often im going to have foreplay with her already.hahha.. mini13K--hey thanks man.that was nice.I will ring you up if you r wearing a skirt.haha.joking.but really thanks alot for the offer.i will keep that in mind. minimad-'-body is important eh?mini not MINI?got it...(jotting it down...), J_A_M--yea im seriously thinking hard about it..ive contacted the owner to see it again 9YaTaH--yea im thinking about it..but it seems wierd to be joining one of these when you dont own one yet...but once i get my mini,i would sure be interested... secondly story time: alright..well apparently i got this craze for old things.and i was never into cars.never bothered about the models.never bothered about its speed/version/mechanics.the looks of a car(though i admire from time to time)i dont drool over it like many enthu-on-cars-do.TO me,its just a 4 wheel transport that saves time.point A to B.as simple as it is. However ive always preferred old cars(vintage/classic ones) and sometimes in the bookshop i would check it out in mags.Just to marvel at a creation that lasts such a long time.Like a legacy. Then beetles and Minis are more common from where i come from(singapore actually)and time to time ive always thought it was a nice looking car.Anyway, one day i saw this haynes restoration manual in a bookshop on the mini and i read a few pages on it.after reading into the history of the car i decided to do a little research on it.surfing webs and seeing pics.Seeing how passionate people and the pride they have in their car(mini) kinda made my growing passion fuel. From there it kinda snowballed and i eventually bought the book!!!(since then on i knew i had to get my hands on one of these babies and its going to be handy)haha...it was then i knew the passion for it kinda grew.. so came my task of finding one..well im an international student here in sydney.and from where i come from(singapore) its a shitty job to own a car.It is unimaginable to buy one.So sometimes i understand that some people, esp asians here, may like to grab the chance to own something speedy and flashy(yes.i understand.and its irritating sometimes to see them show off their expensive automobiles)and the locals who dislike that show-off attitude and crap.its a two sided coin.anyway, back to my point.well seemingly it seems hard to find one.ive seen one that i like.and im really keen to get it.Comparing it with others, which so far ive only gotten an opportunity to see one physically,it was like love at first sight.(other pics werent really that nice, location too far, sold or off-budget.etc) so came my deal with the guy.still considering. The funny thing is that sooooooooooooooooooooooo many many people are like advising me not to get a mini.hahah.but im stubborn by nature, and often smile and think to myself(well balls to you)hahah..anyway definitely its on schedule to get one.just hope that i can find one that i like and one that i will own soon(well my studies end next year.) so ya.thanks for the advise and acceptance here man. soon you guys will get a chance to see the pics of my prized possession. And guess im not only gg to be addicted to the car/culture/coolness , this forum too... ausmini---------you guys ROCK!!!! |

9YaTaH--yea im thinking about it..but it seems wierd to be joining one of these when you dont own one yet...but once i get my mini,i would sure be interested... Thats just the point DeeDee....you go along and meet people who know Minis and who can advise you on what to look for....most times the members know which cars are for sale and their history......you then get to make an informed choice and possibly have an expert along to check out a car you might be interested in.... ![]() ![]() ausmini---------you guys ROCK!!!! yeah...unfortunately, I was around at the end of the Rock and Roll era.. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
