Ok so this is a fairly general one but i havent seen much chat about gearboxes on here but have heard over the years by people not necessarly in the know that mini gearboxs cant handle Hp very well true or false and what is the best combo in your opinion both in the ways of bang for buck ![]() ![]() Ps i have never had a problem with my mini gearboxes in three minis BUT i have never had much power to play with ![]() ![]() |

Depends entirely how you drive it. Some people can bust even Mk2 S boxes and rodchange ones doing smokey starts and flat shifts.. eh baracade.. ![]() OTOH, boostedmini has run a Mini-K box under the 1360 turbo, for years. No problem. ![]() |

I have heard it said the main reason geraoxes let go is that the tolerences on the main bearing have to be right. IE Shimmed and torqued correctly. So thats hat i did when i put mine together. So I will test that theory over the couple of months. Cheers Aaron |

Cheers Aaron Having broken a few boxes myself I think it's just abuse... ![]() Stripped 2nd gears & clusters is usually the result of hard 1-2 shifts and good traction from what I have seen. Baracade broke his 1st box, but the fault was whoever built the box before he got it had left the nose needle bearing off the mainshaft... crap it made a mess. ![]() |

It's amazing the Mini gearbox copes at all with the power and torque being developed by some of the more powerful engines nowadays. It was an adaptation of the Austin A30 gearbox that was used in the sump of the Mini in 1959. The A30 box itself, dates back to the Austin 8 of 1935. There have been progressive improvements throughout the decades (changes in teeth profile, syncros, bearings and shaft sizes for example), but it's still basically a gearbox designed to cope with the A30's 30 HP A-series engine. ![]() If you understand that and treat them with respect, they usually give good service. |
