| Post subject: | Headlights - no low beams |
Hi all, I drove the mini home on Monday night and noticed the headlights weren’t working. The front parking lights work, and high beams work too, just not the low beams. Any suggestions on the first place to start checking things? I’m guessing it’d be the switch on the floor? Thanks |

Hey timmy I had the same issue a while ago with my clubman. While it may be completely unrelated as I'm not too familiar with the wiring differences between our cars, I ended up finding that it was a wire in the indicator stalk that had broken from the factory solder. Re soldered it and it worked a charm. Might be worth a punt? |

Thanks Joe. I don’t believe the Mk1 wiring has any headlight wiring going to the indicator stalk, but I did remove the stalk a few months ago and haven’t used the headlights since so it’s worth double checking |

Check the headlamp wire connectors behind the grille. Blue/red is low beam. It might have pulled out. |

Hey Timmy I had no lights on one of my cars. Washed out the toggle switch on the dash with electronic cleaner. Fixed it up good.. Maybe worth a try Regards Glen |

I had similar issues with lights working intermittently (able to be switched on, but sometimes not coming on), and having bad earth (one headlight very dim). My problem was the switch under the floor. All the terminals were thoroughly corroded from water and and also been melting the sound proofing and shorting - burnt crisps all around it. I would definitely check the floor dipper switch, even just to make sure everything is happy there, as mine seemed rather innocent. |

I guess that’s a reminder for people who have used any foil covered sound proofing to thoroughly check its well clear of the floor switch. There is no fuse on early headlight systems. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Power goes from the dash switch to the dip switch and then to the selected output. As your highs are working power is reaching the dipper so the dash switch will be ok. |

I pulled the dip switch off the floor and the middle (signal from the switch) terminal was a bit crispy but otherwise OK. Heres the result from the multimeter: 12V to dash switch 12V to dip switch 12V to low beam from dip switch 12V when switched to high beam 0V at the double bullet connector near the grille Low beam lights up if I use the parking light bullet for power So quite possibly the worst possible conclusion - a break or burn somewhere between the dip switch and the grille. I think this means it's finally time to add the relay I bought a few years ago and run some new wiring. |

If you probe along the line using sewing pins or similar you might be able to narrow it down further, I hate wiring with just red or black wires everywhere, so it might enable you to use existing wires from relay to headlights and or dip switch to relay. |
