Hi there,

Wonder what your opinion is, I have removed the under bonnet insulation so I can paint the top side only of the bonnet. I will clean up the under side, wash, polish but not disturb to much and glue the insulation back on.

Q. The under side of the insulation is reasonably solid but looks quite ratty (see photos), do you think I should glue back on as is or apply a coat of matt black spray paint or something else to strengthen it and protect it going forward??

I bought an insulation kit from Minisport. I never fitted it as it didn't look solid, I was afraid it would shed fibres.
I considered spraying it with acrylic clear, but decided to use stick on aluminium/butyl rubber instead.
Engine noise is reduced and bonnet doesn't rattle now.

Edit
Bought 10 stick on pads 400x500 for $57 on eBay.

I did something similar with my deluxe, but as my S was in need of some light refurbishment but for the most part was untouched I am trying not to alter anything we're possible.

I sympathise with trying to keep to originality but those insulation pads did look ratty and disintegrated easily. Doubtful they actually had any acoustic benefit either.

Like drmini I have made up pads mostly from underfelt leftovers. The last one I covered in a dressmakers' facing material from Spotlight, that resembles spider webs. You might be able to use the facing material to cover the face or back of the original padding, as the facing material looks similar to glassfibre texture.

The stripes are spray adhesive. They wouldn't be seen if the whole pad was sprayed in black.

Which cars actually came with underbonnet insulation fitted when new?

That's food for thought, could be a good solution. Thanks for the feedback and pictures.

For Australian round-nose Mini production (i.e. excluding imported cars) the fiberglass under-bonnet insulation pad (part #24A959) was fitted to the Cooper S only according to the parts books. There is no mention of it being a production part for the Cooper. If anyone has information to challenge that then please feel free to comment.

For the Clubman model a similar construction but different dimension insulation pad (Australian part #HYB3746, based on UK part #CZH861) was fitted to the Clubman GT from initial production but deleted at car number 1200, according to Service Liaison Summary #234 dated 25 August 1972.

I understand your dilemma regarding originality versus practicality. The original blanket in my 1970 Cooper S is in a slightly worse shape than yours. I was (and still am) tempted to glue it back so the car is original but I think it will probably detract rather than enhance the appearance. If you want to freshen up your blanket I can tell you the original specification of the pad as per the BMC engineering drawing is fibreglass matting coated with "black neoprene paint", whatever that is. :?

A google search suggest Plasti Dip may be a suitable spray product to repair the mat. Apparently it is heat resistant to 200 degrees F (93 degrees C) so should be OK for this application.

Great, thanks. Must be an omission in the parts book I checked.

I'm assuming your car is Oz assembled?

I have a few photos of Coopers with the under bonnet sound deadner. Here is a nice one from Matlock.

I would also be interested in how Originalminis soundproofing was made. It looks effective and close enough to factory standard.

From looking at mine, it seems as though there would have been a mould which a spray was put on and then the fibre matt layed over that. I am thinking originally it would have just looked like a black smooth moulded surface and the texture of the fibre matting wouldn't have been overly present? Unless the initial sprayed layer was thin in places?
