Don't think there is a 'best method', but I'll have a shot. I assume you mean the spring that keeps the external handle horizontal?

If the door is still on the car, pack a towel in the bottom of the door to stop things falling into the black hole.
Leave the glass in but wind up the window.
Remove the internal handles, pocket trim and door card and the decorative chrome button.
Remove the screw that is under the chrome button and push out the little square interlocking peg towards the middle of the door.
Remove the 3 screws holding the door latch and push the latch towards the front of the car out of the recess it sits in. Look out for a little felt seal around the tongue of the latch.
Now you can see the spring, one side of the interlocking U bracket and sometimes a circlip on the end of the external handle square shaft.
Remove the circlip (try to see where it flies). To slip the interlocking U bracket off the square shaft, I think you have to slacken the screws holding the remote control unit to get clearance.
Then the snail spring is visible.

If you bend the U bracket out a bit, you won't need to refit that #$@& circlip.

The door I was practising on didn't have that circlip either and the world hasn't ended.
