EDITED!

A bloke I know just bought the brown Cooper that was for sale IN QLD.

I'm helping him out with some bits and pieces and I'd like to know what gear cluster it should have.

The engine number is 1368, which is 100 higher than the last engine in the list of ongoing changes in John Sneddon's book.

That entry says "B form helical gears added to the gearbox", and the previous page says the gears were made in Australia and not compatible with English gears, so the gearbox should have B form gears, but what should be stamped on the laygear?

One day Tony you may get it right but at present you are still making elementary errors.
The engine code for the Australian assembled Cooper engine is not 9Y/Sa/L but 9Y/Sa/H.

Simon K - the highest engine number for 998 Cooper I have a record for is 9Y/Sa/H 1542

There were 3 gearboxes that I suspect were all Mini Deluxe and I was hoping that they had the same ratios as the Cooper had originally but it seems not.

The laygear in the gearbox he grabbed is 22G231, I looked it up quickly while he was on the phone and it seemed like it would have the most re-usable parts if it didn't turn out to have the Cooper ratios.

edit:

oh crap, now I'm confused!

it's John's book that I was referring to - page 133, top of the 2nd column, and Engine 9YSaH 1268, not car number 1268 - the engine number of the car my mate has bought is 1368

apologies to everyone.. maybe I should start over

The 'Fifth' Design change within BMC's A Series transmission was introduced (amoungst other models of the period) at Cooper 9Y eng #1268 as stated above. This Design saw the 'B' form (and less inclined helix angle) introduced. The close ratio version of the Fifth Design change was the 22G 232 laygear used in conjunction with the 22G439(440) 1st gear hub. It also carried through BMC's 'Fourth' design change which was a strengthening of the 'spur' gear (1st) by reducing the approach angle.

Earlier 'A’ type gears with their more-inclined helix angle on the helical gears were used up until this point albeit with the strengthened spur gear as per the Fourth Design change. When ‘B’ type gears were introduced throughout as part of the Fifth Design change, they had to be fitted in complete sets. That is, with the exception of these early Coopers [9Y/Sa/H 1001 - 1267] (and others including the 1071 'S') which carried through the 'A' form helix. The close ratio laygear for this 'A' form helix and 'B' form spur (1st) utilised 22G 204 / 44 laygear and were manufactured to accept the ‘B’ form 22A 1021 1st gear hub and 22G 202 reverse gear.

The two sets of gears through these two Design changes, even though stated in documentation as both being 'B' form, are not interchangeable. HTH
