I just got to look inside my Mini in bright light and discovered that there is mould on the seats.
The car has not been driven throughout all of Sydney's wet summer and lives in a dry garage, in a dry house, on top of a hill.
I have had the windows closed however and this has probably contributed to the problem (and maybe the upholstery wipes???) . I will spend the next few days stripping out and cleaning EVERYTHING.
Be warned. Open up your car as soon as the sun shines.

Absolutely. Most Minis rusted and went mouldy from the wet underfelt upwards.
So far I have found no evidence of dampness under the carpets but will pull out the seats, carpets and all of the closed cell foam underlay.
I will then attack the mould and hopefully get it outside in the sun for a few days to cook off the spores.
I am also thinking of a semi-permanent, exhaust fan, to keep air circulating through the car.

Hello Dave,
I guess you probably know that a small amount of oil of cloves
mixed with water and sprayed on can be used to treat mould.
There has been a fair bit of information on mould removal in the media
lately given the flooding on the East Coast.

There is a product called wet and forget indoor that might be worth investigating. Best to test on hidden areas. We use normal wet and forget on brick paving it's very good BUT follow the instructions exactly.

Thanks for all of the help. I tried the vinegar attack; multiple wipes over two days and a nail brush along the stitching seams. Hopefully this and normal Sydney weather will prevent a relapse.
Interestingly there was no evidence of mould anywhere in the car except for the two front seats. I lifted all of the carpets and they were perfectly dry. This gave me a chance to rearrange the rats-nest of wiring on the floor and jigsaw the useless sound deadening foam back in place. I will organize a small fan to blow in fresh air each day.

Ive always suffered from mould problems up here with my cars as its part of life. My Carcoons didnt totally solve it. However a dehumidifier inside the Carcoons and some of this gel has totally stopped it. Those moisture absorbing containers that you can buy from Bunnings are useless here as they fill up in a few days.
