Hey all, Im wanting to add water/oil gauges & possible tacho etc to my mk1 that still has a centre speedo. I like the idea of the Mk2 oval type dash piece - but before i pull the trigger on that, id like to see alternate ways of installing gauges while keeping the open parcel shelf/dash. If you could share pics of your mk1/mk2 dash to help inspire me for dash ideas. Thank you |

Lots of hard work for this one. Attachment: DSC_3882.JPG This one from Nippy Cars in the UK - expensive but a classic. Attachment: DullesDash.jpg Or this one - also costs money. But the Mk2 is one of the cheaper options as they were fitted to the Mini K and can be found second hand. |

I was looking at the oval binnacle as well because i have the cooper backplate and brackets, but in the end opted for a home made wooden dash. I used an original walnut dash as a template and customised it for the gauges. I made up a bracket and put 3 gauges in it - water temp, oil pressure and revs - and mounted it in the centre under the parcel shelf. I've got the temp and oil gauges on either end and the tacho is in the middle. I don't look at that one all that often. Depending on if the key ring is hanging down, I move it a bit. Mostly, I hook the key ring up over one of the switches. I do need to move my head a bit when I'm driving to see them but for me, they work well. My thinking was that I wanted something that looked like what would have been done say in the 60's or 70's. White gauges match with the white speedo. Cheers, Rocky |
