When solenoids get old, they click and no go. This is because the high starter current arcs the copper contacts and with time eventually wears them away. The solenoid armature pulls in still but it runs out of travel before making proper contact.
I know this, `coz I've pulled a few Lucas ones apart and made short term fixes..
