Since publishing my book "Australia Mini & Moke - 1961 to 1982" I have continued to undertake research into the subject, in particular the subject of build numbers.

I have recently completed this task and produced the attached document for your reference. The format adopted is identical to that which was utilised in Appendix 7 with some minor enhancements.

I would welcome any readers comments which may improve the data.

As noted within the table 75% of the numbers quoted have been sourced from known data, the balance drawn from observations of build data. It is these numbers that are of most interest.

Copy the document for your reference

During the preparation of the attached Data Sheet I have able to confirm build numbers for some models, those numbers are contained in the "Confirmed" column. The balance, as listed in the "Estimated" column, have been based on available data I have been able to assemble.

In the interests of firming up the "Estimated" numbers I would be most interested in hearing from any readers who have a vehicle with a greater build number than those listed below, you will note most vehicles listed are the base model units or commercial units. Any information will be treated with confidence and not shared with any other parties.

Morris Mini 1100 YG2S3 1759

Morris Mini-Matic Mkl YMA2S4 2661

Look forward to your replies.

If anyone has a later build car than what is in the registers I would be happy to add it. The more input we can get the more accurate the registers will be.

Parts manuals are not an accurate way of collecting car numbers and build dates. They were known to misquote engine numbers as car numbers. Here is one example.

Using ADR plate data the Ausmini register for the YG2S6 estimates less than 1000 of these were built. Jan 1973 was the last month the YG2S6 was built because the new version 021A2S2M10 started in Feb 1973.

The pic below shows YG2S6 1424 with ADR date Jan 1973.

Here is a parts manual update quoting YG2S6 3569 in Jun 1972. This should read engine 1000-3569.

Your assumption that YG2S6 3569 should read 1000 3569 may very well be correct and I have no evidence to say no.
However taking this assumption to the next step would mean that YG2S7 6983 should read 1001 6983 and YG2S8 1415 should read 1200 1415.
1200 1500 was fitted to a November 72 build Clubman GT, so all the dates line up for a change which occurred November 72.
Just another one of those unsolved questions

When a document refers to a change in the powerplant they should be quoting the engine prefix and engine number. But alot of the time they combine the car prefix and engine number. Here is another example.

The 1000-xxxx series engine was used in the YG2S6 sedan and YJBAV6R Van.

Pub 1052 is quoting a clutch change effecting YG2S6 2296 and YJBAV6R 2296 when it should be quoting the engine number 1000-2296 which could have been used in either the sedan or van.

Attachment:
Clutch change point should be engine 1000-2296. Not YG2S6 2296 and YJBAV6R 2296.jpg

I am not saying to never quote a Parts manual but to have a bit more diligence and not accept their car numbers for granted. The factory would list change points to the powerplant via the engine number when it was assembled - not by car numbers.

Here is another example of the Publication getting it wrong.

The Alternator was changed to the 15ACR at engine 1000-2017. The service bulletin only quoted the engine number as the powerplant could be fitted to either the YG2S6 sedan and YJBAV6R van.

SLL 74 15ACR Alternator at 1000-2017.jpg

This change point was changed from engine 1000-2017 to car YG2S6 2017 in the PUB 1052 parts list.

As you can see I am very wary of using a Publication as a source of car number change points and total build numbers.

Now for the GT engine you have quoted. Using 1200-1500 as a compassion for 1200-1415 is inappropriate. 1200-1406 and 1200-1422 are June 1972 so that would also backup the theory that 1200-1415 is June 1972 as per the above document. Also YG2S8 1415 which is quoted in the above document is actually a Dec 1972 car and cant be listed in a June 1972 document. Perhaps one day you will believe me and my evidence.
