What am I????
So we acquired this Leyland Mini and she has no compliance plate. Need to work out what model she is and if anyone knows in NSW Australia if rego can be done without a compliance plate. No old rego papers, no details of anything previous to the paddock we got it out off. Is there a way to find out what model she is without the compliance, we have googled, tried to check the VIN and everything has left us with no answers yet
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The chassis number is on top of the radiator support shroud. If there is no radiator shroud then the next step is to find the body number and body code behind the master cylinders.

If the body code is M2 over 22 then the car is a YG2S7 Clubman. If the code is M2 over 21 then it could be a YG2S6 Mini 1100 or 021 Leyland Mini. That photo is shocking for identifcation but the lack of flares suggests its not a Mini S.

Even with a Body number and Body code you wont be able to identify the original chassis number. Only estimate what it may have been and a rough month it was built.

Cross your fingers that the number on the radiator shroud is there, that's all that should be needed for rego. Some states are easier than others (hint, please fill in your profile location) and outside the capital cities is usually easier too

Will update profile shortly, thanks. Just found out this arvo about this forum from a mini group. So was kinda a bit keen to see if I can get the answers I seek.
Have some better pics coming too

Those pics are better and it appears that it had flares. The rear seat has a raised section which started in 1975. Hopefully there is some body or chassis stamping.

Here are the 2 areas to look at

M2 21 Is stamped behind the master cylinder. There's also 5 numbers stamped above that.......
There is a plate welded on the radiator shroud support, with numbers stamped on it so I'm assuming that's our VIN ???

Ok so that is a Leyland Mini. The chassis number should be stamped directly into the radiator support shroud.

For example 021X2S1M09 28708 has body M2-21 15047

The stamped numbers are what they use for rego, so as long as there is a clear enough number you should be ok.

The "VIN" system wasn't used until 1989, so the number on the car is the chassis number which is what they use before

Okay so I have found 2 sets of numbers. The front numbers closest to the headlight area are stamped to a metal plate that has been welded on.
Further back is what appears to be a combination of 15 numbers and letters. Very banged up but we have something that begins with 021X2S then possibly a 1.....

Finally managed to get a REVS check on the numbers that have been stamped to the welded plate and it says its a 78 leyland mini blue in colour........ The sticker in the engine bay says crystal white which from what we can see seems to be the original colour....... It was blue at one stage and other colours but white originally.

The radiator shroud was removed and it looks like the original chassis number 021X2S1M09 30074? was restamped to the inner wing. Then the car was reissued a new VIN/Chassis number N1NVS087Y360. This is probably the one you now need to use

The ADR plate is also missing but would have looked like this

Are the last 5 digits 30074?

Also I'm assuming the ADR plate is what we were thinking is a compliance plate???? If so yep we realised it was missing once we got it home.
