Have an Aussie round nose with central speedo. The speedo is hard to read at night - odometre and fuel gauge are OK. Should I be chasing a fault like low voltage, is it my ageing eyes or is it standard? Globes are new 2.2 watts. Any ideas? |

you can buy LED bulbs not sure where to buy them, Some of the minis in the hunter morris club have fitted them. The forum will let you know where to buy them. Allen |

Mine is pretty dull too. There's no direct path from the bulb to the speedo face, so it needs to be bright enough to bounce off the casing and make it to the front of the speedo face. Timmy I fitted some of those and they were useless in my Mini gauges. I went back to originals. I think the bulb tubes are too long for LEDs. (Edit) I'm talking about the oil and temp gauges. But a mate has them in a Midget speedo and work fine.. :-\ |

Checking the speedo again, the tubes are only for the warning lights, so the LED's my be OK for the dash illumination lights. I think I will give the LED's a go as per Timmy's comment. Might try them in the oil and temp gauge as well, but these do have a bit of a tube. |

Just remember the ignition warning light needs the load of the incandescent bulb, so you either keep it as an original bulb or add a resistor to simulate the bulb |

I think the brightness of the speedo illumination does rely a bit on the condition of the inside of the speedo - if its grubby or dusty there will be less light refracted around to make it brighter? maybe? |

Have rebuilt a couple of speedos and tachos recently and the original inside of the metal surrounds are painted with some areas of stark white and others of duck-egg blue. I guess these colours are meant to reflect less yellow light but my eyes don't seem to register any improvement either. |

I will double check the cleanliness when I change the gearing over next week, but pretty sure it was all good with no rust or paint deterioration. |

I've still got a few LEDs I will put 2 in a borrowed speedo for test. Can't get into mine without pulling the 45 Dellorto off first. Edit LEDs I have are too long when in original red/white wire bulb holder. 18mm overall. Distance to back of dial is only 16mm. Mini K speedo. But light distribution looks good when held in place. I need shorter bulbs..... I've ordered some from eBay won't get here for 6 weeks. Must be coming via Russia...! Hope they fit... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/254421913339 |
