Post subject:  Original Tyre for Cooper S

Hi All,
Would anybody have a photo of an original (from factory) tyre as fitted to a Cooper S. 1969 - 1970.
I have several lying about that I was going to use as the spare.

Cheers
Ian

Sorry, no photos, but memory says Dunlop SP3 came first, then , Aquajet (nicknamed Aquaslip), but I Cannot remember when dunlop Sp41 came into play. Aquajets were a 10" version of what they specially designed for XJ6 Jag, so that makes it 1970 odd ??? cheers
So maybe sp3. sp41 Aquajet again there will be some with better memory

The 1966 road test car had Dunlop SP41

As did the GT in 1971

I thought Dunlop Aquajets were a bit more upmarket than what the factory could afford to offer as standard.

Tony Cripps' engineering drawings book for Cooper S lists "Approved tyres are Dunlop SP41, BF Goodrich 990 Radial 145 10, Dunlop Sports Aquajet, Olympic GT Radial pattern 65A."
Not sure if 'approved tyres' means they were factory fitted, or just OK to use after the factory tyres were replaced.
I know my mini K came new with Olympic Air-Ride cross-ply in 1969, suggesting the Olympic GT radial might have been the S alternative from Olympic supplier.

The police spec also requested specific tyres
1967 - Olympic GT radial
Sep 1970 SPO41 - Dunlop Aqua Jets

My 65 S came in 2013 with an Olympic GT Radial (in photo) as spare. It probably wasn't an original but must have been close, as I could find no reference to them after about 1972.
A 1965 Bathurst 500 video shows a Dunlop banner in the BMC service area and an Olympic sign in the Ford (Cortina) area. This might give a hint about the tyres supplied with the cars (or just the sponsors on the day).
Whatever you find was the original, it is now more than 50 years old and unsafe to even fill with air, let alone put on the car. I replaced mine with an A008 but found that is thicker than the original and I had to shave the boot board to let it fit.

One of the issue's that has just been mentioned is getting the spare tyre to relocate in the boot wheel well with the modern placement tyres.
Even the 145 standard tyre size in modern replacements don't seem to fit with out some modifications to the boot board or brackets.
I've also added the original style sound proofing in the boot which is not helping matter's.
It would be nice to overcome this issue and keep the original details in the boot.

You might already know that MiniSpares sell a bracket kit for the boot board to accommodate 165 ratio spare wheel - p/n CCC115A

I was advised that you could do that but wanted to stay some what original if possible.

Attached are pics of the Dunlop SP41 tyre that is the spare that was with my 1965 UK Cooper S. Not sure if it was original as there is a number on the tyre that suggests it may have been manufactured in 1967.

Still in good condition with a tube but would be for show only.
