Calling all motor building experts!!!

Has anyone assembled a motor without enough end float on the idler gear? If so, what kind of issues did you get when driving the car?

I am trying to understand what the problem with JAM is......after asking 1001 questions of many different people, and getting varied replies, the issue of idler gear end float seems to stick.

Yesterday I was sitting stationary with car in 1st gear. I went to take off, moved forward in 1st only 3 meters, then put my foot back on the clutch. The car still wants to drive forward when doing this, and 'surges' for about 3 or 4 seconds....almost like 'bunny hopping'....even though MY FOOT IS ON THE CLUTCH!

Occasionaly I can't get ANY gear while driving - very dangerous! The car stops rolling when I put it in gear, with foot on clutch. Take it out of gear and it starts rolling again.

Is this all relative to a Mini with not enough end float on the idler gear?

No, it's a symptom of not enough end float on the PRIMARY gear- it doesn't want to stop spinning. Did you check endfloat after you replaced that worn C-washer.....?

oooohhhh....that sounds worse!

So when the clutch is depressed, the primary gear should....what? Sorry, I can't get my head around how a clutch operates....I have never understood that concept

No I did not check the endfloat....I just put the new C washer in and continued on my way.

Hmmm...will THAT wear in? :?

Well I am not a motor building expert in fact I am not an expert at anything :).

But basically when the clutch is depressed the primary gear should stop. As the clutch is held in place via the pressure plate and the thrust bearing is what stops the motor from stalling when the clutch is engaged. This also allows you to select different gears as you already know while driving and basically stops the gears in the gear box from spinning. Then as you release the clutch it moves back to the flywheel on your motor and then the gears start turning with the engine.

Here is a website I found for you quickly which may help you understand how clutches work :)..

so...in my case....when I press my clutch the primary gear isn't stopping? And that is giving the symptoms I described above?

Why wouldn't my primary gear be stopping? How does end float contribute to all this? :?

I have no idea what this end float thing is, but still sounds like my clutch problem, when the cylinder had siezed, and only worked for a fraction of the distance it should.
Unless it's one of those simple but annoying things like the clutch plate is on backwards or something, I can't help further.
Good luck.

I had the hydraulics checked out last friday, and the mechanic said that it was A1. He thought it was non hydraulic related issue, could be the thrust bearing carrier, but didn't elaborate any further, as I wasn't paying him....

Who built the gear box? If mechanic take it back.

So is JAMS engine coming out?

When you take out Pops engine I have the correct gold mini K paint for his motor.

g'day Steve. I might pull JAM's motor out after Gannons, if this issue won't correct itself  DRMINI (Kev) built the box, and is backing it 100%. I assembled the motor/box/clutch and I was a first timer in doing so......probably missed something or did something wrong

Pops might get the treatment next year I think. Thank you for the offer! :D I'll have to get that paint code from you!!

Anton there are only 3 reasons I know of, why the primary gear won't stop (if the clutch is freeing properly):
1. Not enough endfloat. Should be .0035" minimum.
Maybe when you replaced the worn C-washer with a new one it's now too tight....??
Note you can check this without pulling the motor out, but the flywheel & clutch has to come off.

2. Primary gear bushes too tight on crank. You didn't change them, so that's not it.

3. Oil too thick. Unless you are using 40W/70 (ie Penrite HPR50 or something) this is not the problem...

My money is on #1....

Anton, After reading up on the issues with Slidey now in the workshop, i would say that you have no endfloat also on the primary gear...... when i looked at the clutch assembly last week when Slidey heart was out i noticed no movment in the primary gear....

That and the fact that the Crank Bolt was finger tight

Once again i would think the Masterful Obi Wan Docobi is correct

its unusual to just change the c clip and it tightens itself up and eliminates end float by that much. I would say either the prmary washer has slipped or the bush at the end of the prmary gear has come loose and worked its way out of the gear causing it to jam up on the clip.
maybe im wrong but your in the right direction.pull the clucth and cover and see if the issue is looking you in the face.
