I have a Mk2 Cooper S with AYG0175 distributor and would like to know the points dwell angle.

Is there any coralation between the distributor and the type of camshaft used in arriving at 60 degrees?

No, The dwell is just the optimum time the points are closed for the coil to build up charge and sufficient rounding of the 90 deg dissy lobes. The specs say 57 to 63 degrees or 14 to 16 thou point gap. Same specs for all models.

How do you set the dwell angle using a dwell angle analogue meter. I ask because I used a feeler gauge (14 to16 thou) and then a meter and got a completely different reading (not 57 to 63 degrees).

The ppints gap is what determines the dwell, using a feeler guage is pretty accurate, but obviously you need to have the correct size feeler. 15 thou not 15mm obviously..
The meter is really only a voltmeter with 12v as full scale deflection (fsd). As the pints open and close the meter will go from zero to fsd with each lobe opening the points and powering the coil on and off. Thus at cranking speed the meter will show an average deflection as it tries to keep up with the rapid on/off and therefore will show half or two thirds fsd etc indicating the gap. 15 thou is usually pretty close.

It’s worth also checking all four lobes on the distributor cam to make sure they all give the same gap/dwell. If they are worn you’ll get erratic timing and dwell per cylinder

This is a common fault with many new Chinese made distributors.

Point gap is the "rough" way of setting the dwell. If it is far off though then either it is being set wrong or there is an issue with the distributor. You may be able to crank it over and adjust the dwell by reading the meter instead of the feeler gauge.

At least you don't have to worry about a worn vacuum advance plate causing the dwell time to go up and therefore killing coils.

And you are reading the correct scale and likely having to multiply it?
I remember reading an MG forum where someone couldn't work out why their dwell was wrong, eventually they realised that they were looking at the 6cyl scale.
