Post subject:  Best colour poll for round nose minis

Just trying to get a sense of what colour best suits round nose minis by asking people what their favourite is.
Obviously I can’t add all the tones and variations. Just really keen to see what you think.

Would Camino Gold be classed a "Brown" in this list?

It totally depends on the "vibe" of the car.
If it thinks that it is a race car then BRG or red will work. A shopping Deluxe might be light blue or white. A perky little 850 would want to be red. A cop shop office car would be light blue. A water board van would be grey.
Ask the car, it will know.

A lot of the time we just accept the colour of the car we are buying as the mechanical condition, price, etc. is more important. Being able to choose a colour could be based on the “vibe” of the car as Dave says, but more likely the “vibe” of the person. As a senior citizen I’ve found my preferred colours have changed as I have mellowed over time.

If you want to flaunt your pride and joy then red, BRG, or a custom non-factory colour makes sense. Personally I now prefer an understated or bland colour and just let the Cooper S badge do the talking. Mine is Baltic Blue.

If I ever got the chance to respray mine I’d like to do the original tartan red all over

My second preference is black monotone

I think Mk1s also look great in black Tim. In fact it’s my first choice and I’m really disappointed I didn’t change to black when I resprayed mine. Be interesting to see if it rates very high with others.

I don't mean to hijack the thread with a question, but just as a side note, when was British racing green first used on the Mini? Thanks.

Looks like 1963 on the Cooper

Funny that it was never used in the UK!

Just like how red with a white roof was first used as a factory colour in Australia, and it wasn’t used in the UK until the 1990’s

Thank you for that, I must try to use the search function better, I did try the search but did not come back with that.

You do realise there’s no such colour as BRG... Sure British racers used dark green as their “National” colour but each manufacturer had their own shade. Vanwall green is different from Cooper green which is not the same as Lotus green.

Which are all different from what BMC Oz marketed as BRG.

I had a Fiesta Yellow S in the 60s that I thought was a vile colour.... but it’s grown on me ...

My 63 should be Smoke Grey ..one of the rarest colours. Why so rare? No one would buy it if they could avoid it.

Cheers, Ian

My First mk2 S (11/69) was Aubergine with crystal white roof. Similar to what winabbey said earlier, it was bought as my first car in '76 due to its condition, options and what it was (Dad liked his cars). The colour grew on me, haven't seen another one since - except for a mini K monotone. My younger brother bought a lovely black on black mk1 S a few years after. Looked amazing, hard to keep clean and very hot in Queensland's' summer. Current car under resto was connaugh green with crystal white roof - jury is still out on whether it will be that again or period correct '70 colour.
