A very general question, but what's tyical/expected life on a Mini gearbox?? What sort of milage have been reached without attention required? |

I've seen them do 100,000 miles from new, with the synchros still OK.. 
Depends entirely how hard you thrash it and how often you change the oil, IMO. Mind you almost every one I've ever stripped for rebuild needed a new layshaft... it's a weak point for wear. |

That depends on lots of things, How well built it is in the first place How well maintained the running gear How worked the motor is How much work it has to do How much Crap you give it when you drive it. Generally a well built gearbox will last as long as the motor before attention is required, usually it will only be a layshaft and baulk rings that need attention. Except when you give the motor crap. That help? Cheers Aaron |

Thanks...it does help..Engine is out now for rebuild and I'm just 2nd guessing myself whether gearbox should be seen to as well. This is even tho I have no current troubles with it. |

That was my initial thought too, so I got a bath & full overhaul priced up while pricing engine work. Unfortunatly I had trouble justifying the extra approx $700 to my finance dept. (ie mrs). Time to get on a learning curve to see what I can do myself to clean it before it goes back together. |

You are absolutely crazy if you are going to do the motor and not the box they share the same oil. One will damage the other if not done and greatly reduce the life of the rebuilt motor. steve |

they are not that hard if you just take your time to doing it right, you really cant get it wrong. just be carefull of springs etc if you decide to take it apart, they can come form unexpected places on the first time. |

is your gearbox screwed when you are gearing down, 3rd great, 2nd good, then back into first and it doesnt really like it...seems like it is sorta 'juddering'

No problems I've noticed. All 4 foward & 1 reverse locatable and operational. Can only say that the unfamiliar driver let operate it has had the usual trouble to find reverse and changing 2nd to 3rd |

if their is any metal left in the box or wearing gears metal can float around the motor and cause another premeture rebuilt do it once do it right. steve |
