Post subject: | Oil cooler pipes- do they have a use by date |
Hi all, My car has original rubber pipes to and from the engine oil cooler. I’m wondering if I should be considering replacing them as part of the restoration. Do they deteriorate or go crumbly internally over time? I’d hate to be driving it and bits of inner hose begin to come loose. Originality is good but I’m thinking about swapping them for new ones. To be sure, to be sure. Any suggestions? Cheers Neil |

Back in the '80s one of the original hoses on my S let go at the swage sleeve, spraying the engine bay in oil and leaving an impressive smoke screen behind. I had one of the hydraulic hose shops make up a new set and am still using them. I was also thinking about buying a new set. But the usual parts suppliers have braided hoses, or missing the angled end on one hose, or they just don't look original. The specialist version, like 'Catmint' in UK seems too expensive to me. Am going to reuse the old Pirtek set as the hoses are made from serious rubber and although not shiny and new, still look good inside and out. Might check with winabbey if he has any of those yellow bands left. |

I see that Minisport Adelaide have some original looking hoses but they are out of stock at the moment. Still unsure but I think that I’ll probably just renew them with whatever I can get for now so that I won’t have to worry. It’s probably different if it’s driving around but it’s been apart and sitting dry for years. Cheers Neil |

The are a few "common failure points" with the Mini but the oil cooler hoses isn't one of them as far as I'm aware. The rubber appears to be good quality and still serviceable in hoses I've used, the crimping of the connections is good and the braid covering helps avoid external damage. If your existing hoses aren't leaking then I would suggest reuse. Bill B wrote: Might check with winabbey if he has any of those yellow bands left. Yes, I have a few sets somewhere. Will have a look for the relevant box. |
