Here is the full engine bay photo of 2281 showing the slam panel as well.

Was the bonnet lock mechanism unpainted originally?

Are you asking about that car or all cars? That car was repainted a few times so I don't know what it had originally.

There are lots of unrestored cars with both painted and unpainted striker plates. Another one of those hard to answer questions.

Going through my pics it looks like the MK1 S was painted and some Mini K and MK2 S were not.

I was asking in general, but prompted by that car as the painted strike looked odd. Mine is just plated not painted.

Thanks for asking winabbey, I was wondering what to do there.

I have only seen about a dozen cars MK2 S with the horn attached to the flitch panel and no holes in the slam panel.

I wonder if the harness needed an extension piece or deconstruction when the horn was relocated, or did the standard main harness reach?

Not sure this is exactly what you mean when you say 'the horn was relocated', but my mini K (early 1969 assembly) has its horn on the lower front subframe channel, as normal, and there is a pair of extension leads in correct colours, linking the wiring harness to the horn.

If you mean that the horn was 'relocated' from the slam panel to the inner guard, the original harness would reach either of those positions without needing extensions, I think?

That is the scenario behind my original question. The MK II Series Mini wiring harness was spot taped rather than fully taped or bound. If the horn had more than one possible mounting location did the horn wiring need to be "extracted" from the standard harness with retaping needed?

The Mini parts book specifies this horn extension harness, perhaps used for the Mini K horn location on the subframe Bill mentions above.

Yes No extension was needed for the flitch panel mounting.

All models that had a horn under the generator/alternator would have used the extension. Deluxe, Minimatic, Mini K - even the 1971 Cooper S.

Going by the ADO15 on your drawing it looks like it was used also for the 850 which usually had the horn up near the brake master cyl.

Just while the horn is up for discussion at the moment :-) mounting bracket bolts and washers/nuts. Plated or painted black from factory?
Bracket is painted black but unsure about the above mentioned.

Cheers

Most small parts came from the suppliier either cast, plated or painted black then during the assembly process they could be painted engine colour, body colour, satin black etc

If you look at the 1968 Brochure for the MK1 S you can see the horn bolts remained plated and not touched up with black paint

Thanks
I think I'll leave mine plated at this time as I can't recall any painted black in that area.
