Been thinking about this for a while now, hoping someone can help (although I probably should know myself), my original 850 engine (reconditioned and in good condition) but it has this very loud whine. I remember my first mini, also an 850 was a bit whiny too, but nothing like this. You can hear it really clearly in this clip if you jump to near the end around 5:50 where it’s taken from outside the car. It was really loud inside though and through every gear under load - both backing off and accelerating. Just wondering if it’s diff, gearbox bearing somewhere, or primary gear. I would normally say diff, but not sure on the mini.

Idler gear would be my bet. If its bearings go they can destroy the gearbox case or flywheel housing.

Thanks drmini, the engine is out so will have to do a strip down, but at least I’ll know where to start. Big learning curve coming up for me.
