Well, Who had their money on it being a broken crank?? Step up and collect!! Now hand it over - I need it to buy a new crank!!!!!! Seriously, I need a large journal 1100s Crank - If anyone has one they can spare or knows where I can get one without having to trade in my First Born, that'd be great. I bet that radius in the corner of #2 rod journal wasn't right- that's where it started from. Looks just like Gareth_1330's did... ![]() When you find one- crack test it before grinding. The last 5 of these Spiro at St George Crankshafts got to do, 3 were cracked already... |

Few ways to do a crack test: Simple way: Stand crank on end, strike top crankweb sharply with a 1/2" spanner or similar. It should ring like a bell. "ding........." If it doesn't, it's cracked... ![]() This test is not a joke- both GR and Spiro the crank man use it. Other methods... magnaflux, X-ray, dyecheck.. cost $$, & will show where the crack is too- but that's small comfort. ![]() Where to get another 12G1505 crank?? Try- PM Brickworx here, Mini Classic (Greig Malaure), Mini Spares & Repairs, Mini Spares Centre Padstow, Mini Suzuki Spares 7 Hills. |

How does something like this happen???? Pretty easily. Usual cause is imperfect radius put in the corners when crank was ground or reground. Creates a good stress raiser there- in time, with spirited driving, it fatigues and goes bang! ![]() |

Is this something that he (IMO The best engine builder for mini's in the whole friggen world) can make less likeelly to occur? like would that have happened due to some bad workmanship? or is it something that is not really preventable? Do i need to be more gentle on my little girl? it was lightened and balanced..does that make a difference? |

I have some cranks and ill have the cranks crack tested with a magne flux method incase there are any weak spots that wont show up with the tapping method. Yeah i have come accross my fair share of cranks being broken in 2 in my time. If you need any cranks let me know as im coming over next month and could bring one with me $200 plus $5 per kilo excess baggage so yuor looking at about $260. let me know and ill get it crack tested in the mean time for you, by the way the crank will be unground but not routed just would beed a polish or a grind, actaully i will have a look to see how gooda ones i have and pick out the best one. 12G1505 crank. |

He does nice work, so don't worry too much... ![]() |

Wow. I was always told 1100s had a predisposition to such injuries but I never really believed it would happen. Did this do any other damage to the engine/gearbox? It looks from the 1st photo that it held together okay. Might not have been so lucky if it had been a conrod as you first suspected. |
