I just got 4 new silver steel rims but need them to be cream to match the original wheel in the boot (‘62 850]. Should I just spray paint them with a metal epoxy paint, or powder coat them. Price difference is obviously massively different in favour of painting, but your thoughts appreciated, as any other options too. |

I recommend painting them (as they were originally). Powder coating can chip when kerbed etc and is hard to restore. Cheers. |

Worth checking they are true before painting, fitting tyres and balancing. Rotate slowly by hand on the rear and use a fixed pointer to check the outside lip. |

While I agree that paint is easier to restore as powder coati n is a PITA to remove, I had some wheels powdercoated may years ago and they still look good. |

Just as an update, showed the wheels to a powder coater and he advised me to paint them. The join on the face to the rim is too steep, too tight and too deep, said he couldn’t guarantee that the powder coating would work in that area (did explain some technical reasons as to why). |

Suggest you don't paint the flat surface that mates to the hub. I've heard others mention the possibility of wobbly wheels as the paint (or powder coat) breaks down over time. |

The powder coat particles are electrically charged and the wheel is “earthed” so the particles are attracted to the wheel. Because of the narrow valley between the rim and the centre, the particles are attracted to one or the other before they can get to the bottom of the valley and hence the possibility of no powder coating there. This happened to a set of my wheels so I used a tiny paint brush and a tin of Humbrol enamel and painstaking painted the valley. Regards Phil |

Although I’ve now decided to just leave them silver for the time being anyway. |
