Post subject:  TRIPLEX laminated windscreens
I do hope the very interesting history below will get an airing.

I am interested in the TRIPLEX laminated windscreen history
1. When TRIPLEX was introduced and deleted
2. The different windscreen seals used as opposed to toughened screen and more modern laminated screens
3. The years the TRIPLEX sticker was used

Stickers can be seen on the MK1 S, MK2 S and at least the early GTs. The stickers were usually removed so its hard to find an original sticker. They can be seen on many Bathurst photos and some road test or press photos.

gtogreen1969 A sticker is exactly what is, it can be stuck onto any windscreen. Do you have any show room car sticker photos? Maybe the real TRIPLEX windscreens were only used on special Mini's.

They might have put the sticker on the windscreens in the parts bin before they were fitted to cars to prevent mix ups.

The 1965 Cooper S brochure says the windscreens were laminated but doesn't stipulate triplex.

The laminated windscreen 24A2236 was fitted to Morris Cooper S as standard, and then also Morris Mini Clubman GT. In May 1972, this changed to part number HYB4966. This was probably because of ADR8 coming into force in July 1971. The toughened glass windscreen fitted to the Morris Mini Deluxe is 3/16 thickness, while the laminated windscreens are 1/4" thickness. The laminated windscreens require a different cross section weatherstrip compared to the toughened glass ones. Triplex does not get a mention in the drawings but there is a story on the company in a Partner Newsletter dated about April 1960. Regards, Tony

I am wondering if the Austin 1800 had the same front window profile as the Mini had. I am pretty sure the Austin 1800 had a laminated screen. If this is correct maybe the profile would be wide enough to fit my TRIPLEX screen in.

Any thoughts?

My 1975 Leyland Mini S definitely had a toughened windscreen. It shattered into a million bits when I was slipstreaming a mate on the way home from Mount Gambier. We used to always carry an emergency plastic windshield back then, they came in a small plastic bag and you just knocked out the glass bits and taped it onto the car then drove a lot slower for the rest of the trip. Frequently found bits in the car still long after vacuuming it “all” out. After that I bought one of those things that fitted to the windscreen by suction and pressed a rubber tip onto the screen to supposedly absorb the impact of a rock and save your screen.

It would appear that other cars like Morris 1100 and Austin 1800 can be fitted with toughened or laminated glass and in both cases, the glass thickness is 1/4". With the Mini range, the toughened glass is 3/16" necessitating a different weatherstrip. The profiles shown below are sized to scale (the dimensions are not provided on the drawings, only a scaled hand-drawn image. I've assumed that the width of all these seals is the same, and this is reasonable for the two mini ones shown. The others may be greater width, but even so you can see that the profiles are all different.

He measured his windscreen as 9/32" as opposed to 1/4" quoted for a Triplex Laminated. No idea if he is trying to use a 1/4" seal or 3/16".

Didn’t change the rubber when I replaced my (broken) toughened windscreen with laminated back the 60s. Don’t even think to ask.

No Idea, it was laminated but not sure of the brand, my guess would be TRIPLEX as I doubt you could select from a range of manufacturers. Just dropped into to the windscreen shop and picked it up with the new screen.
