Can you find 1st and 3rd with the engine off? If yes then look towards the clutch, if no then detent springs. Doc?

Well, you have all the gears towards the back of the car looking at the stick, so I'd say something isn't reaching forwards enough. Try with the gear selector disconnected.

It does seem like something is not quite going far enough forward. It feels as if its almost in but not quite. Is it possible that the selector toggle is hitting the box and just needs to be adjusted.

Check that the external linkage that runs from the top of the diff housing to the input back into the gearbox are correct, and that the bolts in the clamps are tight, it sounds like you may have not quite got the alignment of these as they should be, have someone move the gearlever and check you may need to move it around on the spline a couple of teeth so it pulls a bit further. It is not the detents as they work on 1st-2nd plane and 3rd to 4th and the symptons you describe are just the external linkages

hope thats all it is.They're awarkard at times to get to and adjust but it beats having to pull the engine out.
