Probably been covered many times but opinions change as do oils.
So which oil do you use in your Mini and why?

Gulf Western 20W50.
Because gives better pressure when hot, some folks even race with it.
Has plenty of zinc in it for our flat tappet antique motors.
Cheap when on special at supercrap,
Yes I have used penrite, castrol edge 25w50, valvoline XLD, etc etc before.

It's on club rego, it gets an oil change and wix filter once a year, or sooner if dirty.

I am running 15w40 diesel oil as it is an auto and the additives in petrol oils are bad for the automatic transmission. The diesel oils are also often rated to an Allison auto spec and is a lot cheaper than the commonly recommended MA2 motorbike oil.

I know it is not very useful info for someone with a manual but there are often auto owners who don't know so if one sees my comment it is good.

Gulf western, Valvoline XLD or Penrite when on sale. Good pressure and stability at high temps

Castrol GTX was no good as it gave low pressure and drop gear knocking

Just for those following along at home - this was in 2018.
Please note that the opinions in the below image are not my own, use the 15w50 at your own prerogative. (just noting the difference between the XP or XMP)

Yes Penrite HPR30. Have been using it since 2003 and also do frequent changes along with filter.

Is Valvoline XLD Premium API SL/CF ok, or needs to be the XLD Classic API SG/CD ?

I've been using Penrite Classic Mini 20W-50. Penrite states it has high zinc levels but doesn't mention how much.

The Penrite HPR30 20W-60 says it has 1600ppm of zinc.

Is there any benefit of one of these over the other for a general driver 850?

Thanks Rocky

The Classic Mini oil doesn't get a mention, but this chart is useful for looking at ZDDP content of Penrite products, something a lot of other manufacturers don't share

That's a really good chart Ben - thanks for the link.

I'm going to get in touch with Penrite tomorrow and ask them for the zinc ppm in the Classic Mini oil. I'll post whatever I find out.

Rocky
