Just to start a debate. I have a mixture of chrome and stainless caps (some are NOS in original packaging) - all with the correct fine knurled edge. Is there a change point? |

A good question. Documentation indicates the original cap was chrome (8G654 - a UK part number) while the locally made cap AYA5074 is stainless steel which appears to have been introduced late in 1965. Of course there are probably after-market caps around which could be either. |

NOS 8G654 is definitely chrome with fine knurling. Tony, can you throw any light on the age old argument of course knurling versus fine knurling - which is the correct knurling for twin tank Cooper S please? |

AYA5074 is listed for YDO4, YDO5 and YDO6 in stainless steel with 20 knurl "pitch". Released for production 17/9/1965. I suppose this means 20 knurls per circumferential inch. The van cap is the same except for it having a vent. I can't say how many knurls are for 8G654, only that it is chrome. Often when a UK part is reproduced in Australia for local content purposes, the material changes and is given a new part number. I may have the original cap from my 850 and I'll check tomorrow (I put a locking cap on some time ago). |

Guams weather will eat the Mini alive... |

Is the cork gasket still available or what is the substitute. |

Buy some cork gasket material from a hardware or car parts shop. |

When replacing cork on fuel caps I use butyl rubber of similar thickness (it is petrol proof and doesn't break down into pieces). I can confirm that the chrome 8G654 has 20 knurls per circumference inch. The other caps I have are stainless with 10 knurls per inch (see photo). I am guessing they are from early cars as some are stamped westwood who made many parts for BMC in the late fifties and early sixties. |

Um. I have it the other way around for materials. My original cap 8G654 (62 850 - original with the car since new) is chrome with 10 (edit, eight) knurls. The drawing (and another cap for AYA5074 I have in stock) shows 20 knurls for stainless steel. - 2nd Edit: i've now looked at both caps below in detail. They are both stainless steel. The left hand one (original 850) has, however, a different finish to the right hand one. The only evidence I have for a chrome finish for 8G654 is that the parts book says it is chrome plated. On the other hand, for AYA5074, it clearly states 301 stainless steel with 20 knurls per inch. Since above you say 8G654 is stainless (which I now agree), I am thinking it might be chrome plated stainess steel. I've also noticed that the profile of the caps I have are different. The right hand one below matches the drawing for AYA5074. Additional: The information on the drawing states that the gasket is 0.060 - 0.065" nitrile cork. (I thought nitrile was a rubber substance, but that's what it says). This was available as a spare part from Payen Byrne HYL 2364. Perhaps you can still buy it somewhere... |
