Question about wiring connections. 1969 Morris Mini. There are three spade connectors on the alternator but my new VIN WIRING loom only has two wires, one large and one small. Does anyone know which wires go where on the alternator? Attachment: Lucas 17-ACR Alternator IMG_0601.JPG

Large wires are normally for the charging circuit. Small wire for the sensing circuit or IND Are those spade terminals all tied together? |

Visually the large alternator spades look connected but there is no reading from the multimeter. |

The small connector goes to the small terminal on the alternator and is the ind connection which is the charge light on your dash. You can connect the large connector to either of the large terminals on the alternator. They are the same point. When I use the 17 acr I run two parallel wites from the alternator to the starter solenoid utilising both large on the alternator for increased current capacity. |

Ok the alternator is working but not putting out many volts to charge the battery, about 12.7v. Where can one buy a kit that includes the rectifier, regulator, brushes etc? |

Widely available on ebay. Search 17acr repair kit. |

Jaylec (auto electrical distributor) sell parts. For example, Jaylec 16-500 appears to be the rectifier assembly. Anyone who sells Jaylec (Cooldrive?) Parts should be able to get them in. There's a few online sellers who list that they have stock of all Jaylec catalogue items but they aren't actually in stock, they order in as required. |

Do you want to repair it yourself? If yes then don't bother contacting AEOW/Tony unless you want a nasty reply. I haven't heard any complaints about his rebuilds though. |

Thank you for everyones input. I have decided to buy a new alternator from Classic Motoring. The parts would cost about $95 and replacement $170. |

Must have got him on a bad day. Unless he is changing his business model to selling built up units, he has always sold parts for customers to repair their own. |

I'll stop with the AEOW posts for now. I don't need this to become an argument. I just try to save people from wasting their time and money. |

About a decade ago I bought a new alternator, it was dead on arrival. The supplier sent me another. I sent the defective one to AEOW and got it repaired and sent back to me for the same amount you are paying over and above the parts price. After sitting in a come in handy place for a number of years it was put into use a couple of years ago after we experienced a failing alternator on a rally. It is running just fine. |
