Following on from my breakdown I have found some info that may help others and prevent anyone being stuck on the side of the road. it would seem there are 2 distinct designs of points for 45d both labelled as GSC118. Attachment: GCS118 type3.jpg This was the type that broke the lug on me a few days ago. Attachment: GCS118 type1.jpg This is the type I have now ordered. You can see that the lug is shorter and thicker so should be less likely to break off. |

There was also the GCS124 blue 'sliding' points used in late 45D also 59D. I had a set, IMO they were a rubbish idea. I went electronic eons ago on my road cars and never looked back. |

They've caused it to look like I don't know how to drive many times. I'd go to take off from lights and it would stall (and it's an auto). It seems that it was the sliding points mechanism at fault, when going to take off the vacuum suddenly changes causing the points to move and make poor contact. I tried a ducellier and it had the same issue. changed to a distributor without this feature and it's never done it again. Now I use the baseplates from Chinese distributors to replace the ones from 59ds. Gets rid of the sliding points. There's two more reasons they cause issues. The new vacuum u its are the wrong length so cause the position to be wrong. The quality of the sliding mechanism on new points is bad. I even had NOS Bosch made in England ones and the plastic was split on every one. |

I snap up older production sets of points whenever I see them at a reasonable price at swap meets etc now, both for minis and my valiants. I am pretty well set for life at this point. |

It would seem it is a lottery which points are received regardless of sales pictures. The market is being flooded with the inferior items as shown in my first picture above. For reference this is what happened to the set that let me down. Attachment: 20241210_163356.jpg I have finally got a set of the better points as shown in picture 2 above so that should prevent further issues. |
