Not legal in Australia. The engine number must be stamped into the block, although not the case in the UK. All engines shipped from the UK had the plate removed and the number stamped into the block at the factory. Often the removed plate was attached to the engine by a piece of wire. Also those are not the style of rivet used to attach the original plate.

It would be interesting to know what is under the plate. According to the MK II S Register an engine with that number would've been fitted to an Apr/May/June 1969 vehicle.

This is a pic of an original plate, legal in the UK.

This is a pic of my engine. You can see where the rivets have been ground off.

Maybe the whole car is an import ..?
It seems to fit into the early ‘69 period on the register though.
Maybe something else is lurking under the plate as mentioned

It has enough clues to put it as an Aussie car. Some people refer to UK publications when restoring minis and they can get some details mixed up

Not withstanding any of the info above which is all relevant, the engine number plate has been reaffixed making it impossible to determine the original number.

The stamping milled off when the engine was rebuilt possibly.
They’ve gone to a lot of trouble making up that plate thought
Still a nice looking car

You can get those plates from Minisport UK. They say they need the old plate or registration details to minimise misuse. They look the same as the on on the car we are talking about.

If inspected by a state registration authority it should be picked up and not be accepted.
