Post subject:  D45 dwell angle
I’ve had some issues with poor quality points for my daughters mini and finished up reinstalling an old set.
We set them to 16 thou and it runs great.
However, I did not measure what the dwell was.
Can anyone tell me what it should be as it is easy to check without having to pull the grill out and manually wind the engine over to get (hopefully) the maximum point gap.
If the dwell is correct there’s nothing more to do, if it is out, then it’s grill removal time.

What was the problem with the points?
I have had problems with new points lately.

1. Suddenly the car wouldn’t start and we discovered it had a really weak yellow spark.
The point gap was OK but while checking electrical connections the wire that goes to the points slipped out of the terminal, hence the poor connection and bad spark.

2. Bought a new set of points and condenser and installed them and it burst into life at the first press of the starter button.
Many, many months later and the performance started to drop off.
On inspection, the points cam follower had severely worn down and the points were hardly opening at all.

3. In the meantime I had bought another set of points and condenser from a different supplier and we installed them.
It wouldn’t start. No spark at all.
While removing these points the terminal that plugs onto the coil wire slipped off as it had not been crimped on properly.
I could have recrimped it but the spring on the points was very long and almost touched the inside of the distributor so I didn’t want to refit them.

We lubricated the cam and refitted the previous points (in 2 above) that had the worn cam follower with the correct gap and it burst into life as it should.

The car is still running fine and I have bought another set of points and condenser from the same supplier as the ones in 2 above.

Note that both sets have the same part numbers but are clearly from different suppliers.

Really cant go pass Lucas or Intermotor.

Having the same part number means nothing.

Its the branded box that u shd look for.

the problem is the points not the box. And it makes no difference on brand as they all come from the same place in China. The key is the style of points.

There is definitely at least two manufacturers of the good style. I recently bought a set of Fuelmiser ones and then four sets of Bosch. There were very slight differences and the COO was listed differently. Most notably was the fact that half the Bosch ones had very bad contact alignment. Something I've noticed on the sliding version too.

It's worth searching for genuine Lucas NOS points. Maybe difficult to find but they do appear from time to time.

if you bothered to look at all the posts and read them properly you would know that the OP stated there were 2 types. as did I I have had lucas boxes supplied with the inferior type of points, which are all made in ! place in China.
