Post subject:  Query about Mini engines..

Was wondering can anyone explain to me what is the difference between an A series motor and a standard motor and which Mini's did they come out in?

standard motor is A series. Later motors in the UK were A+ :D

Still not sure if the + meant it was better :lol:

The A series motor was fitted to ALL minis, mokes, morris 1100s, some MGs and various other english contraptions. The A series includes all versions from 850cc up to 1275cc

There was a revised version found on later model minis - the A+
This was manufactured in england, but was used in some late model australian cars.
It was supposed to be better in design, but quality was "made in england" :roll:

A+ block has "criss-cross" stiffeners on the block
to compensate for where they lightened the block.

A series motor was introduced in 1952 as 803cc in the Austin A30.

A+ introduced 1980 in Morris Ital and Austin Allegro last used Rover Cooper 1.3i Sport 2000.

Poor little thing almost made it to fifty victim of its own simple good (hum hum) design. Typical Brits if it ain't broke why fix it

They were first seen in the Austin A40, which wasn't quite an A Series. It's a 1200cc engine, slightly bigger physical dimensions (somewhere between an A and B series). These come out in 1947, pre BMC merge. Austin had the engine, Morris has Issigonis!

So that's where nissan/datsun got thier 1200 A series from then :?: I read somewhere that BMC helped Datsun out when it (Datsun) was in it's infantcy, I don't know why but I think Datsun got the chance to copy pretty much what they wanted from BMC. :shock: :roll:

I think this partly explains why Datsun gearboxes go behind some MGs etc which is good cause the Datto gearboxes are supposed to be stronger, and they had a 5 speed but good luck finding one :roll:

A series definately Austin A30 1952, Issigonis worked in the Austin design office after merger into BMC.

Austin had no affiliation with Nissan initally. Nissan made a copy of the Austin 7 unlike BMW licensed to make Austin 7 called BMW DIXI. Austin Motor Campany was going to sue but Sir Herbert Austin after inspecting the vehicle first hand declared sufficent differences between the cars for it not to be a seven.

Nissan increased bore and shortend stroke for more power and reliability.

after america bomed the shitta outa japan in ww2 to help the contry's econemy along america and englande gave them patent permissioin or licensing to allow them tho copy and use engines gearboxes transfer cases
and other mechanical stuff cos there factories had been decimated
