When is an 'S' too far gone?

Post subject:  When is an 'S' too far gone?
Lets pretend someone has an 100% original Mk1 S.

It's BRG and White (from the factory - ID plate says so), and 100% complete. 9F/S/aY motor is all there, complete, running, with original SU's, and a 45 Weber as new in a box as well.

It's rusty....er....um...VERY rusty. Roof gutters, boot floor, rear valance, A panels......all very bad. :( It has been sitting in a backyard for 10 years, in the open air.

How far gone would an S be (of this description) before someone said "Too far gone, can't restore it" ?

Does this sound FUBAR?

Personally, I couldn't do the repairs on this, but could a decent beater repair rust damage of this description?











(oh and there is another complete S with this one as well, although it's in bits, needing reassembly, but that's anothetr story :wink: )













Did I mention the rebuilt 1098 motor on K box?


















And the stock 998 on K box as well?





















And 997 Cooper motor in pieces?





















And Mk2 S lift up handle doors? And Mk1 S speedo x 2? And RH tank x 2, and S discs x 2, and Contessas, and S rims, and SU carbs galore, and 5 deluxe grilles inperfect condition, and 2 850 grilles as new, and a LOT more :mrgreen:

Seriously, I want to know if the rusty S (Lake Green / Snow white) is resatorable or scrap metal.......

i just couldn't scrap something liket that :cry:

Ok, opinion........

deeming that there is massive amounts (if the description is apt......) of rust, there would be many many hours of repairs.

Professionally done or you and some mates who have skills? Either way it would be a lengthy process, but obviously much to be saved if you can get some help :wink:

If you feel it can be pulled off, then for sure i would give it a shot..... just take your time.

the thing is, my in laws don't want to spend 45k restoring a car worth 15k

to pay a beater to do all that work would be BIG bickies. I can weld, but I don't think I could repair the rusty roof gutter lips. The whole rear roof gutter lip is goooooone :x

Is it a disgrace to cut up and dump something like this? (less all S bits)

on another note, did the Mk1 S have flares? This one has innocenti bolt on flares, obviously not standard.

Agreed, that was my thoughts of finding a mate who has the skillzzzzzzz. Um re the bolt on flares.... i wouldn't of thought they would have :wink: :?

But i still don't know crap about the models to this day :oops:

Its only too far gone if the body number is so rusty you carn't read it to stamp it in another shell. :lol:
Seriously youjust have to look at what the poms have do to know not much is too far gone. Have MIG & Steel & go!!!

Although I did see a plymoth convertable bought in from the states that had NO original steel & their idea of rust repair was pop rivits & fibreglass......very ugly , Very unhappy buyer.

no, MK1 S's didn't have flares

and I reckon you could repair it Anton, I think the approach you've taken with JAM would extend to extensive shell work - I'd be cutting the whole roof off and getting a good one off another mini (a clubman would do, they're good for sheet metal - gotta get the dig in occasionally)

some would say reshell it, I personally wouldn't...

speaking of body numbers......

there is no doubt that this is an original S. Should the body number on the ID tag match the number on the rad shroud, or is there a number somewhere else?
