Post subject:  Thermostat replacement

I think the thermostat in my recently acquired 78 S Clubby is either knackerred (stuck open) or missing as the car is taking ages to warm up in the morning.

Can I get a replacement at Supercrap or the like or is it gonna be a mini specialist type thing?

Cheers

yeah but test the new one before you put it in by putting it in a pot of water & heating it up on the stove. Should open long before the water boils, and close again as it cools.

I've had 2 new ones fail to work straight out of the packet :x

I'm in Adelaide and yes it's bloody cold here at the moment. But having said that I have had mini's in the past in the UK when it has been well below freezing and they have warmed up quicker than this one. I am going with 68delux thinking that there isn't one.

Is it a good idea to remove it for the summer and put back in the winter?

If you remove the thermostat in the summer be sure to put in a blanking plate(or whatever it's called) without this the water doesn't circulate the block correctly and your engine will be hotter not cooler.

If I remember correctly the water without the thermostat or blanking sleeve takes a shortcut from the radiator return straight to the water pump and out again.

repco can order you in a 10pk of gaskets - usually only takes a day in Sydney, so Adelaide shouldn't be any different.

how do you replace the therostat??

i think mine is broken, as my engine seems to heat up so quickly and not letting fresh fluid through??

Where the top radiator hose goes onto the head is the housing. There are three studs there, undo the nuts, (after removing the rad hose) lift off the housing. Replace the thermostat, re-gasket and re-torque the housing back down. Re-Attach rad hose.

Think thats it.

Hint:
Drain radiator a bit first.

You can get 74C, 82C, or 88C for Minis.
They are a common size, eg a 350 Chev one fits, so do many others.

I use 74C year round, but if you want decent heat in winter I'd use an 82C.
Leave the 88C for the Poms..
