Post subject:  Push Rods

We (thats the royal we AND I MEAN ME) had to take the head off my brothers mini because it was blowin smoke so we did and going to put the push rods back in and there is a HUGE gap between the push rod and the end of the tappet. I put them all back in the same way they came out and now the number 3 cylinder intake valve pushrod gets stuck on the cam it feels like so what is happening????????????

HELP PLEASE???????????!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat

OK what has happened is you pulled the pushrod straight up, oil suction on the end has lifted the cam follower out of its hole..
Take the side cover off and bung it back in.

When removing pushrods on smallbores or S blocks, good idea to wiggle them sideways as you lift. Stops this happening.

just make sure that no3 is not bent now when you were turning it over.
roll it between yuor fingers to make sure it isnt bent now.

Always wiggle the push rods around when taking them out a habit i have formed over the years so i dont forget on small bore blocks.

good answer DR

I suppose a better way might be to pull the suspect push rod and roll it slowly on a flat surface

(like the kitchen bench...if you are game  )

Ok but is there any other way apart from taking the back off and refitting the follower because the motor is still in the car

Ow I have done this :?
I hope you have a tapet cover on the back...as the Dr has said...you have pulled a cam bucket off the Cam.
If you have a side plate take it off and have a feel around for it and push it back up inside and then let it slide back down on to the cam in place...you may have to role the car in gear first to insure it sits back correctley

As dr has said...when pulling out thr rods in future give them a spin to brake the suction...

If yoiu have a 1275..you are in trouble..its engine out time

The cover is one of the two little ones under the exhaust, 1 bolt in each- U can do it easy in the car, 30 mins tops.
No other way, it's lying on its side in there.

the problem is that to get the tappet covers off, you have to pull the carb(s) and headers. :x crap job, and something I am faced with to fix my oil leak :(

I feel your pain Pat......

If no headers (ie stocko) you can do it with (single) carb on...

Grind a bit of a point on the bolt. Makes it much easier..

Ouch. Luckily when this happened to me I had the header and dellorto and head off and I had side tappet covers. I guess if you didn't even have side tappet covers then it's an engine out thing?? :(

Good luck!

The dude just took the head off and bolted it back so probably still no carb and no headers on === easy job.

No Chong, if no side covers it can't happen. No tappet chest... 8)
But OTOH, it makes it hard (or impossible) to change the cam with engine in.
