Post subject:  What would you do???

Guys, have been thinking about this since the debacle with my engine (and the criticism i copped from the previous owner for posting my issues on the forum) and i'd like to know your thoughts...... Obviously you can just vote in the poll rather than giving your thoughts, either way i'm just curious to see if anyone else shares the engine builders opinion :?

caveat et emptor
"Let the buyer beware" is a good motto for buying anything second hand,
but this still bites big time, especially as there is a friend involved.

I've been bitten before, though not to this extent.
When I got my first big $$$ engine rebuild, I kept costs down & learnt a lot:
a specialist mini mechanic agreed to build it for another set of mags/tyres I had,
- so long as I gave him a hand

This allowed me to learn & see that it was done right, and that the hepolite pistons etc I forked out for (parts at cost) were actually used.

Good point AWD.............. i'm over it now and will just pay for it all myself and leave the sorry episode behind.......

The curiosity of what others think prompted my thread

And yes it does bite hard when friendships are irrevocably damaged...... thats the worst part of this whole thing :(

Well I guess this can be a sensitive topic. But if I built an engine for a friend or customer and it was my fault that something happened I would feel sorry for them and fix it.

But the thing is I would have to first take this into consideration.

Be absolutley sure it was my fault that the engine broke down. But in saying this if I said to my friend or customer that something needed replacing and they chose not to replace it then it is hardly my fault. But still offer some kind of assistance to help them. Maybe do a deal where both of us do the labour and the owner pays for the parts if it was not my fault.

Did I understand correctly, that the previous owner (of the car) rebuilt the car but then outsourced the engine build ? ie the previous owner didn't do the engine build but rather just installed it once it had been rebuilt, then sold it on to you as a complete running car.

If this is the case then the beef is with the engine builder and not the previous owner isn't it?

Saying that if I had built the engine and it failed due to negilence on my part I would do what is nessicary to achieve the initial conditions of sale ie build a working motor with the parts, and in the condition originally expected.

If I was the previous owner(under the above situation) then I would be:
A) Helping pursue the engine builder as the work was really done for me and I sold it on.
B) Offering to install the engine or help install the engine once/if it is recieved from the engine builder.

If the engine builder cannot be made responsible then it gets tricky, really the previous owner has been taken for a ride as much as you, so perhaps the costs of the rebuild being shared is the best arrangement.

I guess you could argue that the previous owner has a responsibility to check the quality of the work they have done for them but in this case I guess this couldn't realisticly be much more than a lap around the block and a visual inspection.

All of this is assuming the situation is as I said above. It does get complicated :?

If I have got the situation wrong(ie I didn't get what was going on) I will gladly delete this post

Tough options Steve....

Generally speaking......an engine builder can do the BEST job ever and hand that product over to a customer. The customer can in turn treat the product like sh!t, run it with no oil, thrash it etc, and blow it up. If the customer went back to the engine builder and after this scenario, the customer is in the wrong. IMHO.

I am not saying for one minute that this is what happened Steve, but there are many outcomes to a general question.

I haven't got ALL the facts from your situation, but generally speaking if I was the engine builder I would do a deal. I would rebuild the motor and charge for parts only, not labour.

Yeah Anton.............. i suppose it is a bit light on the options side of things......... i couldn't think of what else to put up there!.

All in all, just interesting to see the thoughts of other members, not for a minute criticizing their thoughts or opinions...........

i would not let the engine builder put the motor back in for the simple reason if he has the shits about this do you think he is going to care about the damage he dose when the motor go's back into the bay the scrathches and crap

My dad's semi retired now, he's had a mechanical business in Brisbane for over 40 years and has done a lot of rebuilds for drag racing, power boat's etc. If an engine failed after only 1500km's, that was his fault ( and that has happened ) he would rebuild and replace at no cost to the customer. When times get tough, you have your mind sake and reputation to think of. Word get's around quick if you do shotty work and people like going to people with honesty.
