Post subject: | Rover body shell |
Say one wanted to build a Mini but wanted internal hinges on the doors. What are the options? *Weld in the Rover a-pillars & swapover the doors to suit *Use a complete Rover shell. Getting one of these complianced may be an issue? Any ideas??? |

I'm interested in this question too - but more interested in peoples ideas for modding an oz (probably 'K') shell. Too hard basket, or is it do-able?? |

Anything is do-able, but the rover shell would definately be the easier way to go. |

If you do it to an OZ shell, would it have to be engineered? |

For sure. It's a major structural alteration.... WHY....... ![]() Later UK cars have hinge problems too when the tinworm sets in. ![]() |

I am probably wrong but i am pretty sure that the doors are a different size too. So it would be a really big structural change. I would go the route of a new/2nd hand rover shell if you were that keen on internal hinges. Not my cup of tea though. OZCOOPER will do a shell too if your over NSW side. Cheers Aaron |

Cheers Aaron Yeah the doors are different, but you could use stock doors & put the internal hinges on them. Would take some work to get it right though, but it would be unique. |

WHY....... ![]() Later UK cars have hinge problems too when the tinworm sets in. ![]() It's funny how you see people cutting massive chunks of body & panels out to repair rust, and no one ever says "are you going to get that engineered?!?!?!". It wouldn't be an alteration, but a replacement. As long as the welding is OK the integrity of the structure will be unchanged as the shape of the panel is the same. Having said that, I think that only a very small portion of 1% of inspectors would ever pick up that anything had been changed anyway. |

The doors are in fact very different. The rover doors are taller, and there is less bodywork between the top of the door and the roof gutter- they dont even fit in an Aussie door opening. Also, the front lower corner is different- square, in fact. Aussie ones are round. See the problems arising? The 'a' pillar is also different. The rover panel isnt just a straight fit, there is a substantial overlap where the leading edge of the door opens into. Of course, with enough money, anything can be done. Or just get a Rover shell. ![]() |

Could avoid the door height issue by using, say a deluxe body and doors. But then you don't get the 1/4 glass-less Rover doors which, for me, would be one of the reasons to do it in the first place. As you said it could be done but after reading input from you guys at the end of the day you're going to be better off starting with a Rover shell. |

I got some spare doors at one stage to put on my 850. I wanted to keep the same look but have the full window thing. Heres what I worked out: You can have electric windows if you're clever, You can do away with the quarter vent window, but you'll need speccial shaped glass. Internal hinges can be done (incase some of you didn't realise, the green car in the for sales is internally hinged ![]() Central locking can be done. However, you wouldn't get all of the above in. So, Im selling the doors and going back to sliding windows. Have fun. |

I have an idea u could use the old Morris doors by modifying it to fit some of the rover parts, such as the interior hinge (may involve some grinding inside) and cut the 1/4 vent glass out and put in a modified one glass panel, and then use the rover inside door skin and weld that to the inside of the Morris door frame so its exactly the same as the rover but on the Morris door and viola you have a modified mini door for a Morris..! if that all make sense, Id try it if I had spare doors laying around.!! Any one want to sponsor me with some doors ? ![]() |
