I want to put totally adjustable suspension on my van. When I buy the parts from a retail supplier do they have to be certified by an engineer? |

Technically yes, i know it doesn' seem right but it is true. All modifications to suspension and brakes that involve non std/manufacturers parts (ie leyland/bmc) need to be certified by an engineer. There are alot of people that have them on the car and not had them certified though, just makes things iffy with insurance. Find and engineer and speak to them about it before committing funds to it. Show them the units(ie pics and specs) and see if he/she sees a problem. We know that there won't be but it is up to the individual engineer. You can also get a costing. To be honest it should cost bugger all for that type of thing. If there is other stuff speak to them on all matters and get them to do all mods at one. On another note, technically those clear lenses that all the wrx's and the like have on there car are supposes to be engineered too. That's why the cops can defect them at any time... Thats gottta suck ![]() ![]() ![]() Cheers Aaron |

Just as I thought. Really I suppose wheels would have to be done if the letter of the law was followed, unless the manufacturers get them certified. Has anyone had retail suspension components certified or, as I suspect, no one bothers? I guess some of the things like HI-Lo's and rear toe/camber adjusters would never be seen in the normal course of events. The front lower control arm and caster bar are the visible ones. I could make these myself, but getting them certified may be easier using retail parts. |

Spot on with the wheels, they are supposed to be the same width and rolling diameter as the originals.... and we all know that doesn't happen. If you make them yourself you definatly get them certidfied, but maybe retail you could just inform your insurance company(shannons seems to be ok with mods as long as you tell them) and have it listed on your policy, still they mat then turn around and reneg on your insurance. its a tough call.
