Not sure what I'm going to do for a fuel gauge though.

Same size as the mini one, 5inch. I was thinking that the trip meter would be a good way of knowing how much fuel was left. Can't see how the trip meter is reset though.

I didn't see the trip meter, nor the price you payed. Great find man! Is it going in a normal Mini centre dash thinga?

Fuel is easy. Just grab a meter from your nearest Jaycar.

Actually, I'd go for a solid state setup. Either a little led bar graph, or a 7-segment digital read out. Easy done. I'll give you a hand when you get to the point that it is actually burning fuel :D

Something like this could easily adapted.

We could make the display a little neater using something like this.

zizzle how would you be able to use that battery meter for a fuel gauge?? i would like to know as im looking for something to tell me how much fuel i have. I got the normal clubbie sender in the tank, do i hook something like that upto it? Or does it need to be modified?

I'm not sure if the clubby sender in the same, but on my van it is just a potentiometer. And I can't remeber whether the sender is closed circuit when the tank is full or empty, but that shouldn't matter.

So the strategy would be this:

a) setup a 7810 or similar voltage regulator to give us a stead 10v no matter what the battery voltage.
b) feed the sender from that supply via a resitor approx. the same value as the sender max. This means the voltage on the wire to the tank will swing between 0 and 5V.
c) recalibrate the LED display to display full scale at 5V. Move the leds so that the red is after the yellow at the low end (red when nearly empty).
d) build up a nice little case to mount it in the dash.
